James (Jim) Dolan, Sr. passed away on Friday, April 7, 2017 surrounded by his loving children. His wife of 54 years, Joan (Joni) Dolan (nee Dooley), predeceased him in March, 2011. Jim led a long and fulfilling life. Born May 10, 1936 in Philadelphia, PA, to Eugene and Eleanor Dolan, Jim was one of six children. He grew up in South Jersey and attended St. Joan of Arc grammar school and was a graduate of Camden Catholic High School. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Fort Bragg, North Carolina as a member of the 82nd Airborne.
He married his high school sweetheart, Joni in December, 1956. They were long-time residents of Collingswood, NJ where they were very involved in the Church of the Transfiguration and the school. Through the church, they joined the Christian Family Movement (CFM) where they met their life-long friends with whom they shared their faith and many adventures.
Jim was a member of the Local 8 Carpenter’s Union and worked as a carpenter in commercial construction in Philadelphia, PA.
In 1978 Jim and the family moved to Washington Township, NJ. When Jim and Joni became “empty nesters” and after 35 years of being a carpenter, they decided to move to South Florida to enjoy retirement. They settled in Pembroke Pines, a suburb of Fort Lauderdale. Jim’s retirement was short lived as Jim accepted a part-time position with St. Maximillian Kolbe Church in Pembroke Pines where he worked until his passing in 2017. He enjoyed his part-time position and made many friends through his years working at the church.
Jim had a wonderful sense of humor which was with him through his final days. Family and friends fondly remember his welcoming personality, his sense of humor, and his steadfast loyalty. He loved his family. He enjoyed their visits, their phone conversations, the holiday traditions, and their vacations together.
Jim is survived by his family, his daughter, Carol Milligan, her husband Mark and their three children, Maeve, Padraic, and Riley; his daughter, Linda Farquhar, her husband, Duncan, and their two children, Andrew and David; his son James, Jr., his wife Wendy, and their children, Jason, James, Theresa, Melissa (and her husband Andrew Lyons), Colleen, and Courtney; and his daughter, Judy Dolan Di Ioia, her husband, Anthony, and their children, Gregory, Kiera, and Anthony. Jim had six great-grandchildren Joseph, Charlotte, Ava, Tatum, Gianna, and Jessica.
Jim is also survived by his siblings, Gene Dolan and his wife, Fran; Paul Dolan and his wife Mimi; Patricia Divish; Thomas Dolan and his wife Marsha; and his sister-n-law, Virginia Dooley. His sister, Mary Eileen predeceased him.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, April 17 at St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church at noon with a gather of family and friends at the Church beginning at 10:30 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made on behalf of Jim to either St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church, 701 North Hiatus Road, Pembroke Pines, FL 33026 or Heaven’s Helper’s, Inc., 124 St. Andrews Drive, Egg Harbor Township, NJ 08234.

To all of the Dolan family, Gary and I were so sorry to hear of Jimmy’s passing. It seems we saw him more in the last few years than we have for many years because we’ve gathered to say goodbye to so many of our parents. We enjoyed chatting with him and always found him to be so witty. He and your Mom were such a perfect match! We miss them both. We wish you peace as you come to terms with life without your Dad, and comfort in knowing that he lived a good life and was such a good man. We’re so sorry he won’t be joining us for Cookie Day as you planned, but we’ll be sure to raise a glass and remember him and so many others on that day. Love to all of you!
