Kenny, Robert J., 41, of Weston, passed away Wednesday, July 21, 2010, in a tragic automobile accident. Born in the Bronx, Rob started his hockey career at the age of eight years old playing at the Sport-o-Rama. His parents Mike and Toni supported Rob’s hockey dreams from an early age. He went on to play high school hockey at Don Bosco in New Jersey and continued on to the USHL with the Waterloo Blackhawks. His perseverance led him to play hockey on a full hockey scholarship for Northeastern University in Boston. Rob continued with the team as Assistant Captain of the Division 1 school and was awarded the MVP and invited to tryout from amongst the top 60 amateur players in the country for the 1990 United States Olympic team. He signed as a free agent with the New York Rangers and played for three years in their organization. Additionally, Rob played for the Long Beach Ice Dogs and the Orlando Solar Bears both of the IHL. He was also a player assistant coach with the ECHL Miami Matadors, and a player and coach for the London Knights. He was a spokesperson for many charitable events including the Smoke Free Campaign with the Rangers and was the booster player of the year for three years with the Rangers. For the past ten years, Rob coached youth hockey at Pembroke Pines Ice Arena with the Golden Wolves hockey club taking several teams to both National and State finals. In his recent years, Rob was a co-owner and founder of the Pinnacle Hockey group. While playing in Long Beach Robby met his wife Janelle and they were married June 26th, 1998, in Southern California. Rob and his wife moved to South Florida and had their first son Ryan in 1999. 12 days after Ryan was born, Rob was asked to play for the London Knights in England. The family moved to London and spent one year playing abroad. IN 2002, their second son Sean was born and in 2005, their daughter Ella joined the family. Rob was a devoted husband and father, son, brother, teammate, coach, and friend who spent every moment possible with his family & friends. He is also survived by his loving mother, Antoinette, brother Michael Kenny; nieces Antoinette, Anna Maria, Ashlynn, & Kinsey; nephews Evan & Konnor; mother & father-in-law Jill and Karl Parsons; brothers-in-law Kaleb Kristine, Konrad Shannon Parsons & Robert McLogan; & sister-in-law Stephanie Ferry Robert. His extended hockey family, from the organizations he played in to his current Golden Wolves hockey family, and all the lives he touched along the way, meant the world to him. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 ? 4:00 PM & 6:00 ? 8:00 PM at the funeral home with a Tributes of a Lifetime Service beginning at 7:00 PM. Funeral Mass will be Monday, 11:00 AM, at Assumption Catholic Church, 2001 S. Ocean Blvd., Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, FL. Dear Miss Toni , Sis aka Janelle, and Mike

I am jealous because you got to know Robbie all of his life and i only got to know him for a short while. Now that he has passed I realize that you have to hold on to your loved ones as there is no “75 year ticket” – you have to love them like there is no tomorrow, because really, there is no tomorrow. One thing Robbie taught me is to become closer to my family.

I used to worry about my sister, going out with some dumb hockey player, me being the, great wrestler I was, but he stood up to me and i knew my sister was in good hands. And I never ever worried because i knew she was safe.

The questions in life: why are we here? This man coached a lot of troubled boys and a lot of boys that had gifts, but the one thing that he gave was the gift of having someone believe in them. So with this I say if you can change one person’s life, just one, past or present, your mission has been accomplished.

Thank you Robbie Kenny for having the chance to know you and for being a great husband to my sister and father to my nephews and niece.

And to the tough guy who I call my sis, I love you, I miss you, and to the three musketeers I call my nephews and niece, I’ll be there, just call.

Special thanks to Andrew for sticking with my sister during this hard time.

Emotionally this is a hard time and people say a lot of things, but I want to say that we need to be true to ourselves and what we say and learn from this and never forget.

Love, Michael

Rob Kenny was the best Coach and friend that I had during my time with the Golden Wolves. In fact, Coach Rob was the best coach that I ever had during my hockey career. He taught me almost everything I know about hockey, and helped me become a more classy, respected, hockey player. I admired and respected him. He is going to be greatly missed by me and my family. Not only is this a loss to my family, but he is going to be missed throughout the hockey world in South Florida. I would like to express my sympathy to Rob’s family. We will miss you, Coach, and I’ll be thinking about you every time I step on the ice. R.I.P.

Unlike many others that had the opportunity to know Rob as the player or the coach, I had the opportunity to meet Rob as the parent, the one who many times was playing with his kids outside, and spending quality time with them. Rob, you will be missed. Our prayers are with the Kenny’s.

I never met Rob. I did watch him play for the Solar Bears, the brief time he was there.

There’s a certain point where hockey fans tend to crystallize in their minds who ‘their’ team is. The standard they set in their youth, and every other team, every year, is compared to. Mine happened to be the 99′ Solar Bears.

Rob quickly became a favorite of mine, largely because of his style of play. So much so, that as a young forward, I tried to emulate him in particular, probably more than anybody. As odd as I know it sounds.

I only found out about his passing today. I also only found out about him having coached today. I guess I did emulate him after all.

I was a team mate of Robs in Waterloo. I just found out about the tragic accident.I am very sorry for your loss. Rob was a very happy person with a great sense of humor. He was the first person I’ve met from the east coast.I was eighteen at the time. I could never get enough of Rob and Jon Roses antics. One time we were in a Mcdonalds and they decided they would be a mafia type family. It was like a Saturday Night Live skit. They were arguing very loud with an over exaderated east coast accent. Once again I’m very sorry for your loss.

Its been almost 7 months, there is not a minute that goes by that we do not remember you Robby and hold you in our hearts. We will miss you for the rest of our lives and hope that somehow, you are able to see the kids as they continue to walk on this journey. We want to thank everyone who has written such beautiful notes on this page. I am printing this for the kids, so that they will always be able see the many people whose hearts their daddy touched. Thank you for your continued prayers.

With love,

I can’t believe how much time has passed since you were taken from all of us. You would’ve really gotten a chuckle out of the little boys this past hockey season! Sean and Christian became very good friends and had a dynamic season ending it by winning Sahof! Sean is JUST LIKE YOU! You would’ve been so proud. You were there with us all the way. Kyle really missed having you on the bench this past year. He talks about you all the time.

Jeff misses your voice of reason and your since of humor that always kept things in perspective.

You are truely missed by so many. You will always be in our hearts and we will never forget you. We miss you,Rob.

To the loved ones of Robert Kenny, you don’t know me but my father passed away on the same day as Rob. He had stomach cancer but had surgery and was cancer free, but his ontcologist convinced him to do a precautionary round of chemo and the chemo took his life. Anyway, I was writing to tell you that on the same day your world changed so did mine and in reading about your son I found the coincidence all to cosmic. My father was an avid Rangers fan till the day he died and I work in the NHL. On that date I was in Carolina working for the Hurricanes – today I work for the The Florida Panthers – my father guided me and my family home to be there for Mom. So I write to let you know that our lives are linked in tragedy but I offer to you a chance if you’d ever like to attend a Panthers game on me.

I am sorry for your loss and hope this offer can provide a smile and future smiles for you. God Bless.

Janelle, you might not remember us – my sister and I and our parents lived next door to you and Rob on Ocean Blvd in LB back in the Ice Dogs days. We were so sad to hear about Rob, and wanted to send our most sinceer condolances. Reading through all the comments here, even though it’s been 20 years or so, obviously not much had changed! We will always remember Robs infectiously positive outlook and kind his hearted nature. His legacy lives on in our memories and your 3 beautiful children

Leave a Condolence
