Harold Robert (Bob) Mandell entered this world on April 17, 1934 and joined his beloved wife Shirley in eternity on April 17, 2018. Bob was born in the Bronx, raised in Baltimore and came to South Florida in 1953. He earned his teaching degree at the U. While earning his degree, he taught dancing on Miami Beach, where he sold dance lessons to a young girl. They went out to practice the new dance steps and after 6 days agreed to make their dance team permanent and worked it out for 46 years. Bob and Shirley taught dance groups and cotillion classes at Temple Beth Am, Town of Surfside, and Temple Emanuel and other venues. Bob began his teaching career with the Miami-Dade County school system in 1957 first at Filer Jr. High (22 years) and then at Coral Park Senior High (22 years). During this time, he taught History, Government, Speech, Economics, and Geography. Bob sponsored a chess club, chaperoned students to Washington and Tallahassee, worked with the migrant program, coached the bowling team, and was with the Dial-A-Teacher program for 19 years. He was elected Teacher of the Year several times, but his personal philosophy was that the rewards in teaching come in small packages, and you never know when or how. He is survived by his four heartbroken daughters Janet Mandell, Laura (Tony) Vitale, Renee (Rik) Reinhart and Leslie (Paul) Kleinman, and his grandchildren Jessica (Nadeem) Shariff, Christina Vitale, Rhett Bluni and Shay Kleinman. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Genny Prahl and numerous nieces and nephews. Bob will be remembered as a loving father, family man and a dedicated teacher who has inspired thousands of students over his 44 year career. Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday April 28, 2018 at the Hilton Garden Inn Ft. Lauderdale SW/Miramar 14501 SW 29th St, Hollywood, Florida 33027 from 4-7 pm. Donations can be made to your favorite charity.

Mr. Mandell was one of the best teachers I ever had. He made American History come alive by having his class become active participants. We learned to whistle and sing "Dixie", we all sang to "the Night Chicago Died" and we all got to see (and try if we were brave enough) snuff. He engaged young minds instead of just talking to them. He also lived in my neighborhood and it was very comforting to run into him around town. He was loved and will always be remembered!

My deepest condolences. I graduated from Coral park in 1987. He was not my teacher, however, I remember him fondly because he was always so nice, funny, energetic and full of happy spirit. He will always live on in my excellent memories of my high school era.
