Eloise Jane B. Leone

August 27, 1924~July 17, 2017

Jane Bingman Leone passed away on July 18, 2017. She enjoyed her career in education. Jane worked in West Virginia, New Jersey, and Florida with all age groups and in a variety of positions throughout fifty years of social changes and challenges. She was a teacher in elementary, secondary, and university levels; a high school and adult guidance counselor and director; a high school assistant principal; a district curriculum director; and an associate superintendent of the Broward County school system.

Jane was born August 27, 1924 in Richardson, West Virginia, one of five children, to Harry and Dolly Bingman. Jane attended elementary and high school in Tanner, West Virginia, and college at Glenville State and West Virginia University , graduating in 1945 and returning to teach there for 2 and 1⁄2 years. In 1946, she married Anthony Thomas Leone, and their son, Nicholas Dean, was born in 1951. The family moved to Florida in 1953 and Jane completed her masters and specialist degrees at Barry College and began work in the Broward County School District. She was at Colbert Elementary (1 year), South Broward High School (20 years), Broward County School District offices (10 years), and Hallandale Adult Community Center (13 years).

Jane Bingman Leone was loved by all her knew her. A person of great joy and optimism, she always worked for the good of others and not herself. She was exceptionally gracious, generous, and kind. Her home was constantly full of family and friends and she was famous for her wonderful Italian dinners, which always packed the house with at least twenty or thirty friends and family members. Her greatest joy in life was her son Nick.

Mrs. Leone was preceded in death by her father, Harry D. Bingman, Sr.; her mother, Dolly Vandall Bingman; her husband, Anthony Thomas Leone; her second husband, Harry Cooper; her brothers George, Vandall, and Harry David, Jr. Bingman, and her sister Faith Reece.

My Aunt Jane was my FAVORITE AUNT! I remember when I was only four or five I was bit by a HORNET outside the corn crib on our farm in Creston, WV. That Hornet landed on my EYE and was sitting on my eye lid, so I panicked and flicked it off and it bit me on the tip of my finger and it hurt like HELL, I remember screaming and crying of course in pain and my Aunt Jane came running out of the house, picked me up in her arms and quickly ascertained I had been bitten by one of the many hazards found on our farm that included Rattlesnakes and meaner than mean Copper Head snakes. She got me in the house and the tip of my finger was swollen and turning purple and my Aunt put medication on my finger to draw the poison out and was there to comfort me, and calm me down. I remember the situation as an early trauma in my young life, and I remember feeling SAVED by my Aunt Jane talking about that mean old Hornet, and how everything was gonna be alright now, and it was. I loved my Aunt Jane very much and I always have since i was old enough to remember —–

Jane lived on the same hallway in the same nursing home as my parents in Charlotte, NC. They all sat at the same table and she joined us in worship on Wed. and Sun. morning services. She always had a smile and such a gentle, loving spirit. My mom is nonverbal now, but Jane and she shared many smiles and often sat beside each other at activities. She was my "ladybug" – my special nickname for her and we had our own form of greeting. I will miss her so much but am thankful she no longer is in pain or confused. Thank you, Nick and Cindy, for sharing her with us. We love you both and pray for God’s comfort. If ever there was an appropriate verse, it is, "Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his faithful servants. (Psalm 116:5 NIV) for surely Jane was faithful. Love you all very much. Nick and Cindy, I just heard of the passing of your mother. I was so sorry to hear this news. Jane was a sweet, sweet lady and I enjoyed getting to know her at Asbury. You will miss her very much, however, know that she is completely healed and with your dad now and healthy and happy. I will be lifting you up in my prayers in the coming days as you adjust to life without your precious mother. Jane will be truly missed. Love and prayers to you both.

Jane was my father, Frank Schwall’s, protege’ in the Guidance Department at South Broward High School. I knew her pretty much my whole life (from early childhood through high school and beyond) and loved her like a most-beloved member of our own family. As my father’s health became more and more compromised throughout the ’60s, Jane took over the department with his full confidence in her character and ability. Sail on, Dear Jane — I will always remember you whirling through your days in a "full steam ahead" fashion — always on your way somewhere and refreshingly confident about your destination, even if it ended up being a complete surprise! Have a sweet rest, now. You have traveled far… Love, Judith (on behalf of my dad, too!)

I met Jane in 1987 when I got my first job as a guidance counselor. She was my boss, teacher, mentor and friend. She taught me all about school guidance but above all, she taught me how to be a good human being. She was loving kind, generous, funny, very wise, patient and above all humble! What a role model. Jane has had a tremendous impact on my life. We love you, Jane and will miss you!

Nick and Cindy, I am so sorry for your loss. I was looking at the lovely slide presentation and in the group pictures, I recognized your mothers beautiful smile. She was always smiling! She really seemed to enjoy her "outings" when I asked her about them. Especially Dairy Queen!!

Dear Nick and Cindy I am so sorry for the loss of your mother, I know that you both know what an amazing woman she was. I loved her so much, she was so good to me and she was a life saver for me when I was so homesick and always made me come down for a good meal. She always opened up her house to me and my friends whenever we came down on vacation., I know she’s in heaven with all the Leones’ and all the woman are cooking for her and all the men are sitting around smoking cigars and playing poker. She was the most intelligent, quick witted and kindest person I ever met. I will always remember her and i know she is sitting at the right hand of God. I will talk to you both very soon. Much love Toni Girl, Nick, Kayla and Vincent Nicholas.

I met Jane Leone while she was a resident of Asbury Care Center, Charlotte, NC. I was acquainted with her for only a short while, but her declining health could not hide her beautiful, loving and caring spirit. Whenever I greeted her, I knew I would get a warm smile and a gentle handshake. I miss seeing and exchanging a few words with her. Nick and Cindy, may happy memories brighten your moments of sadness.

Our noble lioness has left the building. But her radiance will shine on forever. Jane Leone radiated graciousness and kindness and selflessness and joy her entire life. Who would have guessed that that slender little girl from the hollers of West Virginia would grow up to be such a superstar? She became the assistant superintendent of the entire Broward County School District. She never said one bad word about another human being. She without fail remembered birthdays, anniversaries, and Christmases. She spent her money on others and not herself. Even at the end of her life when she couldn’t walk and her mind sometimes failed her, she was still radiant. If you asked her at that time how she was, her response was invariably "I am very well. And how are you?" And she meant it! Sail on, my brilliant and beautiful mother-in-law. We miss you terribly.
