To Mikes family. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I only wish I had known Mike longer. Oh I knew the stories about Mike, but didn’t meet him face to face until LZ StLouis in 1995. He saw me, walked over with his hand out, said “You must be Gary’s brother, cause you look just like him” Then a big hug. Told me many things about my late brother. For all who may not know, the callsign Shadow came about in July 1970 just before his DEROS, when he came out of “retirement” as the Liason Officer callsign Cavalier 50 and flew on the mission to find and recover the missing ship and remains of MG George Casey. He had no official callsign on that mission so he took his old one, Cavalier 11,which was then in use by somebody else, and added Shadow to it. Thus he was “Cavalier 11 Shadow” and Shadow he remained until the end. I will miss him. Felix.

I was Mike’s “bunker mate” in Vietnam. How would I descrbe Mike?
He was a free spirit who was a loyal friend. He was fiercely protective and gave his unconditional love to his friends. In a bar room fight, you wanted Mike on your side. He also reminded me of two of my favorite singers, Elivis because, like Elvis, I could never picture Mike getting old, and Sinatra because, like Sinatra, he did it his way – even at the end. Rest in peace “Cavalier 10”. This is Cavalier 16, out.

I was priviliged to be Mikes Commanding Officer during part of his Vietnam tour, I would say that Mike was a little unconventional in the way he operated and he kept me on my toes. He was blessed with a great sense of humor as well as an inordinate amount of common sense and he used those tools well in looking out for the Charlie Troop guys in the AO and in getting the mission accomplished and had fun doing it. Ilah and I love him and will miss him. Georgina, Kathy and Daniel you had a brother you can be very proud of.

When Mike showed up in Charlie Troop in the middle of 69, I was at 23 one of the old guys. His arrival was sort of like the Tazmanian Devil on steroids, so naturally everybody took to him. He was funny, brash, loyal, and brave; and I was glad to have been able to be his big bird. Our friendship continued after our tour and I grew to love him like a brother. We had great times and shared stories and secrets. I will miss him and his laugh that made us all feel ok no matter how good or bleak things were. Cavalier 25.

My husband, Jim Pressman, served with Mike in Vietnam. I had heard Jim mention his name many times over the years.
I was first able to meet Mike at the DC Cav reunion a few years ago. Mike was sporting a ponytail at that time, and my first impression was that he marched to his own drummer. I think I was right about that. After talking to him for a few minutes, my second observation was that he was extremely intelligent. I think I was right about that, too.
We saw him again at the Ft. Rucker Bullwhip reunion 3 years ago. He was funny and a pleasure to be with.
Our great friends, Rhett and Debbie Lewis, kept in closer contact with him in Florida, and we enjoyed hearing about the continuing adventures of Mike Martin.
We were heartbroken to learn of his illness, and so saddened at his passing. But, then again, true of my initial observations, he marched to his own drummer and intelligently planned out his final choices. He will be missed.
