Surrounded by her family, Doreen Koenig passed away at Holy Cross Hospital at 11:50 a.m. on July 10, 2015 after a two and a half year battle with breast cancer. She was 62 years old.
Doreen Gail Sindicich was born on October 20, 1952 in East Chicago, Indiana at St. Catherine Hospital to Dotti and Nick Sindicich. She has three siblings, a sister, Denise, and two brothers, Nick III and Dean. The Sindicich family moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in 1956. Doreen attended elementary school at St. Coleman’s Catholic School, high school at Northeast High in Ft Lauderdale, and Broward Community College. While attending an engagement party for mutual friends at the Oceanage clubhouse in Ft. Lauderdale, she met Keith Theodore Koenig. They were married on August 26, 1978 and have two children, son Andrew and daughter Daren.
Her husband of 37 years, Keith Koenig, is the President and CEO of City Furniture based in Tamarac, Florida. Together, they have worked tirelessly to enrich the South Florida community through supporting numerous charity organizations such as the Dorothy Mangurian Comprehensive Women’s at Holy Cross Hospital,”The Girlfriend’s Club”, Women Owning Wellness, Making Strides for Breast Cancer, the American Cancer Society, the Museum of Discovery & Science, ARC Broward, Deliver the Dream, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, Museum of Art Ft. Lauderdale, Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Jack & Jill Children’s Center, Covenant House, St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church and School, St Thomas Aquinas High School, the University of Florida, and the Archdiocese of Miami. One of Keith and Doreen’s family sayings is “We don’t give because we are blessed, we are blessed because we give”.
Doreen always put the needs of her husband, kids and family first. She had an infectious smile and was the life of any party. She had an amazing group of girlfriends that she loved shopping with, playing golf together and having a martini or 3 – thus her nickname “Doreen-i Martini”. She was the most amazing wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. Doreen often said that, “We want to be inclusive, not exclusive”, which is why she and Keith always included their friends and family in their social and philanthropic work.
Doreen is survived by her husband, Keith, children Andrew Koenig and Daren Koenig Cronin, mother Dotti Sindicich, sister Denise Sindicich Smith, brothers Nick and Dean Sindicich, son-in-law Ryan Cronin, daughter-in-law Deana Koenig, and her grandchildren KC Cronin 6, Jack Cronin 5, and Aaron Koenig due August 24, 2015.

Dear Keith and family, I am Jackie Rogazione, my history with you and Doreen was the St.Gregory’s golf tournament. My husband, Joe, now deceased and I played with Doreen and also your in-laws, years ago.

I am so sorry for your loss of Doreen and at such a young age. I, too, lost a 55 year old daughter to breast cancer, it is such an insidious and devastating disease. Doreen was such a nice person, my thoughts and prayers are with you and all your family.

In sympathy, Jackie Rogazione.
