Dr. Edward P. Shapiro, D.M.D.
Edward Paul Shapiro, D.M D., of Deerfield Beach, FL., formerly of Schenectady, was born in May 1920 to the late Minnie Rosen Shapiro and Louis C. Shapiro and died November 7, 2018.
He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1938 and attended Union College. After three years at Union, he was accepted at Tufts School of Dental Medicine graduating cum laude in 1944. As it was wartime, he was a member of the US Army while in dental school, completed four years of study in three, and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant upon graduation.
He married the former Minnie Horowitz, whom he had met on a blind date while a freshman at Union. They celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary last month.
After being discharged from the Army in 1946 as a Captain, he returned to Schenectady and soon established his dental office on State Street, where he practiced for over 40 years, retiring in 1988. Patients would stop him years later and tell him how much they missed him. Summers were spent at the “camp” at Galway Lake where family and friends always gathered. Whether at camp, their Schenectady home, or later at their home in Deerfield Beach, FL, Ed was always fixing something, using his mechanical abilities and ingenuity. He was the go-to guy when neighbors, friends, and family needed a consult on so many issues.
Ed lived his life with gusto; traveling the world with Min, playing tennis into his early 90’s and playing Bridge with friends every week. He lived a moral life with Min always by his side, instilled fairness and respect for all people, in all three of their children. His children are so grateful to have had him in him their lives for so long. He was a mensch who will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Min, and daughters, Sandra (Steven) Handler of Galway, Diane (Stephen) Harrison of Slingerlands, and son, Richard (Karen) Shapiro, of Colorado Springs. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Laurence Anouna, Michelle Durkin, Lowell Harrison, Marisa Santos, Elena Shapiro, and Max Shapiro; five great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Albert.
The family would like to acknowledge the wonderful care given to Ed for the past two years by Jacqueline Granville.
The memorial services will be private. For those wishing, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of Broward County FL, WMHT (PBS of Schenectady), or a charity of your choice.
