Professor Chan was one of a kind. His pursuit and attainment of excellence and his support for others, especially those who strove for excellence, were his signature modus operandi. Willie, for this and so many wonderful things, we love you. Family of Willie, we share your pain and your joy. Christ began humbly in Bethlehem of Judea, but his story is the foundation of one of the great religions. Chan began humbly in Berbice, British Guyana. Let all of us who have been impacted by him tell his story, so that this humble Icon will become a Hero, and this hero will become a Legend to all Caribbean people and to the world that he served. May he Rest in Peace.

Professor Chan was a gentle, kind soul who always had a smile on his face. Although he left shortly after I joined the Chemistry Department at Mona as a graduate student, he was held in high regard by both the students and faculty. A very brilliant scientist and one of the founding fathers of the Department, he will be missed by all. My condolences to his wife and entire family.

I met Professor Chan in 1970 when I went to Mona to study for a special honors degree in chemistry. I was in awe as he lectured to a room of 250 N2 students in a soft voice, in an unhurried manner and drew meticulous structures on the board. In the S3 natural products class he challenged us to synthesize those macromolecules as he constantly pushed us to excel. The entire class went on to do graduate work in chemistry. Professor Chan spent his entire career practicing and teaching chemistry. He built up a quality organic chemistry program and mentored generations of students many of whom have become successful chemists and professors. My condolences go out to Audrey and the entire family.

I remember with pleasure our years as colleagues in the Chemistry Department, UWI, Mona. Your leadership in Natural Products chemistry was outstanding as it raised the Department to international status as a result of the research of your group and the annual symposia you helped to organize. During your term as Department Head you also encouraged many of the staff to assume leadership roles – in my case, it was as Department representative on the Faculty Executive for the 3 campuses. Your support was also greatly valued in supporting research such as mine that explored the boundaries in Physical Chemistry of what could be done with the available resources. Thank you, Willie. You will be missed.
