She also competed internationally and was well known throughout the island because of her track success. She mentioned this period of time were some of the happiest years of her life. Her dream of becoming an Olympic athlete was cut short when the Olympics were canceled due to World War II. After her athletic career she continued her education and earned her degree in physical education. After graduation she began working and eventually married. She enjoyed her life with her husband Higinio Gonzalez in the golden years of Havana pre-revolution. She mentioned that life was good, and she enjoyed partaking with her husband in the famous nightclubs and casinos that Havana had at that time. This life was interrupted by the new communist regime and she along with her husband had to flee their homeland. She immigrated to the United States and initially settled in Central Florida where she started her family, eventually moving to South Florida where she stayed the rest of her life. She stayed active and enjoyed sports throughout her life. Going to many Dolphin games, and not missing a single game during the glory years of 1972 and 1973. She followed all the local teams and kept us up to date who was winning and playing well and who wasn’t playing well and needed to go. She kept herself active throughout her whole life exercising and walking for as long as she could. She was a dedicated and loving wife, mother, and grandmother always thinking about her family before herself and what she could do to help. She was intelligent and generous trying to think ahead on how she can help her family and others. She was a lifetime contributor to Miami Children’s Hospital now Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and other worthy causes.

You can tell a mother by the children she raises. Mrs. Gonzalez was my close friend Juan’s mother. She was kind, caring, strong and very smart and realistic. With her son being always running late, getting ready to go out or on the way’ I would spend many a time conversing with her about every and all things. I remember that laugh of hers, some times it was a joking laugh and other times it was do you really expect me to believe the nonsense you are telling me laugh. They are all great memories. She made me feel like I was her family and I am sure she is creating new memories in heaven. Rest in peace Mrs. Gonzalez and thank you
