“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” 2 Timothy 4:7-9
Varughese P. Varughese, lovingly known as ‘Acha’, was born in Kaviyoor, Kerala, India, to his parents Potha and Mariamma Varughese as one of four children. He grew up in Kaviyoor along with his siblings and cousins.
At the age of nineteen, he married the love of his life, Aleyamma, and together they raised seven beautiful children. He worked in Kannan Deavn Tea Estate in Munnar, Kerala and traveled back and forth to Kallooppara to provide for his family. He later had a textile business in Munnar. He instilled the importance of education in his children, making sure each of them had the best education possible in order to be self-sufficient.
Acha was a man devoted to his family. At the age of 62, he immigrated with his wife to Cooper City, Florida where he would “retire”. “Retire” is in quotes because he was given the responsibility of being the caregiver for his many rambunctious grandchildren in his “retirement”. He and Aleyamma lovingly cared for their grandchildren into their eighties so that their children could pursue their careers and make a living in the US.
Acha was a man of great faith. He would spend time daily singing hymns, reading the Bible and praying. Even after his dementia set in, he was devoted to spending time daily with his loving Heavenly Father. He wanted to pass on his faith to his children and grandchildren, insisting that that prayer was done together as a family, every evening in the household and at every family gathering.
Acha was a man of the land. He knew how to fish, how to work the ground to produce a harvest, how to milk cows and care for chickens. Later in life, he enjoyed long walks for miles and eating healthy. Fish curry, rasam, and sambar were his best dishes, among many others he loved to cook. He was a hard worker and did not like to sit still for very long. He loved being independent and doing things for himself.
Acha was diagnosed with vascular dementia at the age of 88 which slowly took away his independence, mobility and his life. However, it can be said that his dementia was the grace of God, allowing him to see those he loved on the other side. Perhaps through the dementia, God was preparing him to cross over and leave this life. He was united with His Heavenly Father at 5:36pm on January 9th, 2022 with his wife and children by his side. He is survived by his 7 children and their spouses, 14 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren (listed below).
Acha’s wonderful life has left a large legacy of love and faith that will carry on for generations. He will be greatly missed and always in our hearts. He is at peace in the presence and love of God now and for eternity. “Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 2 Corinthians 5:8
