Sylvia Henry Nomicos, formerly of Bethesda, Maryland, passed away on Tuesday, March 28th in Pembroke Pines, Florida.  She was the beloved widow of the late George N. Nomicos.

Sylvia was born on April 11, 1936, in Athens, Greece, the second of five girls born to Evangelia and Chris Henry.  She moved to Florida with her family in 1937, and grew up in Cross City, Florida working in her father’s restaurant with her siblings.  A Homecoming Queen at Dixie County High School, Sylvia graduated with the class of 1953 and proceeded to earn her nursing degree at Emory University in 1958.  She practiced nursing until she met George Nomicos, whom she married on October 1st, 1961.  Sylvia and George were married for 58 years until George passed away in 2020. Together they raised three children in Bethesda, Maryland, and traveled the world, living for four years in Brussels, Belgium.

Sylvia was a devoted wife and mother.  Passionate about the arts, she loved teaching her children and taking them to museums and the theater.  She was an active member of St. John’s Norwood Episcopal Church in Bethesda, where she was in the Altar guild and volunteered in the Opportunity Shop. Generous and kind by nature, Sylvia never failed to lend a helping hand and advocate for those less fortunate.  She loved keeping up with her sisters and dear friends with whom she shared a passion for walking and lots of laughter.  Sylvia’s biggest pride and joy was her family, particularly her four grandchildren with whom she relished spending time and being a doting “Giagia.”

Sylvia is survived by her three children and four grandchildren:  Nicholas Nomicos, his wife Kathleen and their daughter, Stephanie of Boston, Massachusetts; Zafeiria Nomicos, her husband Eduardo Julio and their children, Sofia and Alexander of Pembroke Pines, Florida, and; Eugene Nomicos and his daughter, Eliana of Seattle, Washington; and by three sisters: Goldie Mathis of Tarpon Springs, Florida; Frances Kennedy of Savannah, Georgia, and; Toni Henry of Tampa, Florida.  She was preceded in death by her husband, George Nomicos, and her sister, Diana Petropoulos.
