Denis Joseph Mastay, of Homestead, Florida, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2024, at the age of 90. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Sarah “Tot” Mastay, children Bruce Mastay, Denise Mastay Powell (Craig) and Diane Mastay, grandchildren Danielle, David, Michael, Matthew and Sara, great-grandchildren Audrey, Cooper and Edwin, as well as several in-laws, nieces and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents Edward and Josephine Mastay, and brother Edward Mastay, Jr.
Denis was born on June 17, 1933, in Detroit, Michigan. He moved to Miami, Florida with his parents and brother in 1945. He served 2 years in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955 during the Korean War. He was married in 1957 to Sarah Lou Powell and they had three children. At the time they were married, Denis worked for Aerodex as a jet turbine engine mechanic. He then became co-owner of Pete & Denny’s Chevron Station. He worked for Florida Power & Light at the Turkey Point nuclear power plant from 1975 until he retired in 1992. He had a passion for cars (especially Mustangs), stock car racing as both a mechanic and NASCAR fan, and fishing for snook and dolphin. He also had a passion for helping others, a trait he instilled in his children. He regularly attended mass and volunteered at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Homestead where he developed a long-time friendship with Father Jim McCreanor.
Denis will be remembered for the sweet, helpful and talkative man he was, and for always wanting to make sure his family was safe…he often told his children to “lock your doors and windows”. His good nature and his presence will be forever missed by his family and all those who knew and loved him.
In keeping with the family’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. The family will honor his life in a private service at a later date. If you wish to honor his memory, please consider making a donation in his name to Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Homestead, Florida.

The Nichols family was so saddened to hear of Denis’s passing on March 8th. We were very blessed that our dad and Denis were such good friends and had remained friends over so many years. It still brings a smile to our faces to have heard the many stories of dad and Denis racing days in Miami along with many of their other adventures. Our hearts go out to the Mastay family and may God be with you.
