Thomas Edward Hughes was born on February 6th, 1952 in Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami, Florida. His father Fredrick J. Hughes and mother Evalette Hughes raised Thomas and his older brother Fred, and older sister Patty in Hialeah, Florida. Thomas or better known as Tom passed away peacefully on October 7, 2024 after a 6 year long battle with cancer with loved ones at his side. Tom was 72 years old.
Tom dedicated his life to public service and his family. Beginning a 38-year long career in Law Enforcement with the Miami-Dade Police Department in 1973, and then moving to the Florida Highway Patrol from 1974-1978, Tom ultimately found his place with the Town of Medley Police Department in 1978 and retired after 32 years as the Chief of Police in 2011.
Although supremely dedicated to his profession, Tom was a family man at heart. Tom is survived by his loving wife of over 50 years, Miriam Hughes; daughter, Jennifer and her husband, Moe; their daughter, Sofia and his son, TJ and his wife, Rachel and their children: Penelope, Aurora, Graham, and Charlotte. Tom enjoyed most of his time raising his family, taking them on adventures and spending his later years as a loving grandfather.
Tom enjoyed motorcycles, baking, woodworking, making his grandchildren laugh and ensuring his family was always cared for. He will be dearly missed by his colleagues and family alike.
Memorial Services to be held on Saturday, October 19, 2024 from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM with Tributes of a Lifetime Service at 11:00 AM at Boyd-Panciera Family Funeral Care, 1600 N. University Drive, Pembroke Pines, Florida 33024.

Jennifer MirIam TJ and your entire family. I have known Tom since 1973. The year I graduated. He loved his job in public service and encouraged me to pursue my goal of becoming a police officer. In 1975 I began my career and always remembered what Tom had mentioned . I am eternally grateful for his knowledge wisdom and encouragement. May he rest in eternal peace.

It is clear that Thomas lived a beautiful life and was dedicated to his lovely family. Although he will be dearly missed, I pray his beloved family find peace in knowing he is now resting in peace.

I had the honor and pleasure to get to know and work with Tom or how many of us used to called him “Jefe” for 24 plus years, 11 of those working with him. His passion for the job, his kindness towards our Medley Community, and his friendship will take a special place in our hearts forever. My deepest condolences to the family and thank you for sharing such a special person with all of us.

Our deepest condolences to Miriam and all of Tom’s family. We were blessed to have met and traveled with Tom & Miriam through the HOG group. Lots of wonderful memories from our travels. Tom was an exceptional baker and he generously shared his baked goods with all of us at our meetings. His kindness and smile will remain in our hearts.

My uncle will truly be missed by my family and me. He was a wonderful man of character, integrity, and dedication. He served his community for decades while always being a committed family man. His humor and smile were infectious, bringing life to every occasion. My oldest memories are my “big uncle in his police uniform and police car.” He was bigger than life and never stopped being a person who I wanted to emulate during my career. Farewell Uncle Tom. You will be missed and your memory lives on in all of us. God bless you and your family. May you rest in eternal peace.
