September 14, 1926~December 24, 2024

Royal Navy Captain Antony Newing slipped his anchor and departed on his final voyage on
December 24, 2024.

Tony was born on September 14, 1926 in the town of Strood, England, the only child of George
and Kate Rose Newing. He attended university in Wales, graduating in 1947 with a degree in
electrical engineering. Shortly thereafter he was commissioned as an officer in the Royal Navy.
He rose steadily through the ranks and eventually retired as an Assistant Chief of Staff for
Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic (NATO).

It was as a junior officer he first met a pretty WREN named Anne Easton, who became his best
friend and bride. Together, they moved between duty stations in places such as Valletta, Malta;
Portsmouth, England; Faslane, Scotland; Brussels, Belgium; and Norfolk, Virginia. These
postings provided material for his many well-loved and entertaining sea stories.

He developed a life-long love of sailing while serving at the Royal Naval Colleges in Portsmouth
and Plymouth. As a sail training instructor he taught midshipmen from the RN and many
Commonwealth navies the skills to master the winds and currents and safely navigate through
the open and often storm-tossed seas, including multi-day races to France and Spain. In the
process he became an expert at racing under sail, a passion he carried into his nineties. Most
family vacations were spent on a sailboat somewhere or with a camper towed behind and rubber
dinghy on the roof rack! Always ready for an adventure, Anne and Tony enjoyed several winter
seasons sailing in the Bahamas. The Platinum Point Yacht Club displays the trophies
commemorating his many winning seasons shared with his good friend, George Darrell aboard
their sloop, “Bonnie Lass”.

Another passion he shared with Anne was singing, especially anything by Gilbert and Sullivan,
performing in amateur productions of such favorites as “The Mikado” and “Pirates of Penzance”.
He eventually became the director for the Norfolk Savoyards. They also enjoyed singing in the
church choirs wherever they lived. For many years, he lent his strong baritone here at Burnt
Store Presbyterian. He even applied his electrical engineering skills to setting up the sound booth
when this building became the new sanctuary.

In 1997 Tony and Anne settled in Burnt Store Marina. They quickly joined in the many activities
which make that community so appealing. Tony was an avid golfer who put to good use the
challenging fairways and beautiful weather. He once even sank a hole-in-one! He was also busy
in the Guardian Ad Litem program, protecting the rights of vulnerable children in the courts.

He and Anne were gracious and enthusiastic hosts whose home was always available for
neighborhood and family get-togethers. The happy memories these events gave rise to will
endure for years to come. He will be greatly missed. Tony leaves behind two children, Christine
and Steven; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren (with two more on the way!). May
he be eternally blessed with fair winds and following seas.
