Ramona Rivera, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away at the age of 94, leaving behind a powerful legacy of faith, strength, and unconditional love. She was born on September 9, 1931 in Humacao, Puerto Rico to her parents Casimiro Merced and Cecilia Figueroa. In 1948, Ramona migrated from Puerto Rico to New York City, a courageous step that marked the beginning of a new chapter in her life. There she met her future husband, Nemesio Rivera. Their love story led to marriage in July 1950 and together they built a life centered on faith, family and perseverance. Nemesio, her devoted and beloved husband, preceded her in death. Ramona was the matriarch who guided her family with wisdom, prayer and example, always pointing her children toward loving and serving the Lord. Her first and greatest love was her family and she poured herself into nurturing generations with unwavering devotion. A loyal friend and helper to many, Ramona had a special gift for caring for others. Her love was often expressed through her cooking, meals prepared with intention, warmth and joy. Everyone who sat at her table could truly taste the love she poured into every dish. Strong and resilient, Ramona was a true New York City woman with street grit, yet she carried herself with grace and deep wisdom. She balanced firmness with compassion and strength with gentleness. She enjoyed sewing and gardening and remained active in church throughout her life. When she and her beloved husband migrated to Florida, they continued serving the Lord faithfully at Casa de Oracion, remaining steadfast in their faith and commitment to their church family.
Ramona is survived by her six children; Alice, Anita, Lydia, Gladys, David and Sylvia; 13 grandchildren: Jacqueline, Christopher M., Melissa, Ashley, Jeffrey, Tess, Grace, Vivian, Stephanie, Victoria, Maxwell, David and Ellis and 15 great-grandchildren: Simone, Layla, Sophia, Christopher, Elena, Kirby, Chloe, Ellie, Hannah, Catalina, Sebastian, Cade, James, Anthony and Christopher A. All of whom carry forward her love, values and faith.
We loved her dearly and will miss her every day. Our mother strove to follow the words of the following passage from 2 Timothy 4:7-8, one of her favorites:
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day – and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”
Today we celebrate the life of Ramona but there is also another celebration in heaven because a saint has come home!
“He peleado la buena batalla, he terminado la carrera, he guardado la fe.
