George M. Sutherland, age 93, passed away on July 9, 2026, peacefully at home with his family.

He was born on November 8, 1932, in Brookline, Massachusetts to George and Christine Sutherland.  

George was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn K. Sutherland.  He leaves behind his two daughters, Sallie Vlahos of Norwood, Massachusetts and Jennifer and her husband Mark Makary of Southwest Ranches, Florida.  He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Nikolas and Christine Vlahos, Julie and Noah Hoffman, Timothy and Elizabeth Thrall, Grant Thrall and Riagain Makary, as well as his first great grandchild, Porter Sutherland Thrall.

After high school, George volunteered to serve in the Navy during the Korean War.  He was stationed at Port Lyautey, French Morocco where he worked as a meteorologist.   George loved sharing stories of his days in the military.  He was a very proud United States Veteran.

In 1959 George graduated from Northeastern University with a bachelor’s degree in finance and insurance.   He had very successful career in the insurance industry.  He also taught college courses at Northeastern University. 

George and Evelyn chose to raise their family in Ashland, Massachusetts, where they called home until their move to Florida in 2018.  George had many interests and hobbies.  He was an avid tennis player; he loved airplanes and never missed an air show; he loved to go to Scottish picnics and hear the bagpipes every summer.  The thing he loved most was his annual summer vacations in Readfield, Maine.  

After retirement, George and Evelyn would spend the winter months in St. Augustine, Florida.  Playing tennis, walking the beach and staying active all the time.    He used his spare time to research his family history, which included many trips to Scotland and Canada to meet relatives and take notes to share with the next generation.
