In Loving Memory of Ilidio “Santana” Vasquez

December 8, 1959 – October 2, 2026

With profound sadness and immense gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of Ilidio “Santana” Vasquez, a beloved husband, father, bonus father, grandfather, family member, and friend.

Santana was born in Neyba, Dominican Republic, a place that remained an important part of his story throughout his life. His journey later brought him to the United States, where he lived in New York and Rhode Island before eventually making Florida his home for the majority of his life.

Santana built a life centered around family, friendship, adventure, and enjoying the moments that made life meaningful. At the heart of that life was his beloved wife, Miriam Melendez, his partner through the many chapters, adventures, celebrations, challenges, and memories they shared together.

Their love and commitment to one another would be tested in a way no family ever expects. Santana was diagnosed far too young with an aggressive form of Alzheimer’s disease, beginning a long and difficult battle that gradually changed so much of the vibrant and independent man his family knew and loved.

Throughout every stage of his illness, Miriam remained faithfully by his side. She became not only his wife and life partner, but also his devoted caregiver, advocate, comfort, and constant companion. Through the difficult days, the changes, the uncertainty, and the heartbreak that Alzheimer’s brought into their lives, she continued to care for him with patience, strength, dignity, and unconditional love.

Alzheimer’s may have changed Santana in ways that were painful for those who loved him to witness, but it could never erase the life he lived, the man he was, or the love he created. And even when the disease made it difficult for him to express himself as he once had, he was never alone. Miriam was there, walking beside him until the very end. Her devotion throughout his illness was a beautiful testament to the meaning of love, commitment, and the promise to stand beside someone through both the brightest and most difficult seasons of life.

Santana was the proud father of Tiffany and Juan, and a loving bonus father to Daymi and Franchesca. One of his greatest joys was being a grandfather to Jazlyn, Jeisy, and Jeilyn. His family was a tremendous source of pride and happiness, and the love he gave them will continue to live on through each of them.

Before illness changed the rhythm of his life, Santana was a man with an adventurous spirit and a genuine enthusiasm for living. He loved road cycling, finding freedom and enjoyment on his bicycle and embracing the journey ahead. He had a passion for traveling, experiencing new places and creating memories with the people he loved.

His interests extended beyond adventure. Santana believed in the power of communication and connecting people. That passion inspired him to create his own radio station, Tu Voz Global, a reflection of his desire to give people a voice and bring communities together.

Those fortunate enough to know Santana will remember a man who was warm, generous, social, and always willing to lend a helping hand. He loved being surrounded by people, enjoyed good conversation and a spirited debate, and rarely turned down an opportunity to enjoy life. He formed friendships that lasted for decades, and for Santana, friends often became family.

He loved music and dancing—especially bachata—and appreciated the songs that carried stories of love, memories, and life. He understood that a meaningful life was not simply measured by possessions or accomplishments, but by the people we love, the places we experience, the friendships we nurture, and the memories we leave behind.

Santana’s journey from Neyba to the life he created in the United States was one of determination, hard work, and possibility. He experienced different places, pursued his passions, traveled, built lifelong friendships, and, most importantly, created a family that loved him deeply.

Although the final years of Santana’s life were marked by a disease that took so much from him far too soon, Alzheimer’s does not define his story. His story is the life that came before it—the husband, father, grandfather, cyclist, traveler, entrepreneur, friend, music lover, and spirited conversationalist who embraced life and the people around him.

And his story is also one of enduring love: the love of a wife who remained beside him through a battle neither of them should have had to face so young.

Although his physical presence will be greatly missed, Santana leaves behind a legacy that cannot be measured simply in years. It lives in Miriam, in his children and bonus children, in his grandchildren, in the family and friends whose lives he touched, and in the countless stories and memories that will continue to be shared.
