Boyd, Adonis Don L. , 83, of Pembroke Pines passed away suddenly Sunday, October 1, 2006. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Katherine; sons, Laurence and wife Linda, Patrick and wife Caren; grandchildren, Michael Boyd and wife Teresa; Ashley and Brenna Boyd, Dustan Cote and wife Joanna; great grandchildren, Brian, Kayla, Christiaan, Brianna and Adrien. Don was born in Flint, Mich., growing up during the Great Depression. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and fought in World War II. While stationed in Chicago, he met his wife on a blind date. In 1950 with less than $100 in his pocket Don with his wife and infant son drove down to Hollywood to manage an apartment complex. About a year later, He got an apprenticeship at Hollywood Mortuary on Young Circle. The family lived in a one-room apartment behind the business. In 1957, with no one was west of 441. they leased a small home which the converted into a funeral home. In 1967 Don opened a second location on University Drive in Pembroke Pines. He relocated the first funeral home to the current Pines Blvd. location in 1977. It is truly a family business, with son Larry as vice president and Patrick as president. Grandchildren also have worked at both locations. Don was a founding member of St. Stephen Catholic Church in Miramar. Visitations will be from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Boyd’s Family Funeral Home, 1600 N. University Dr., Pembroke Pines. A Tributes of a Lifetime Service will be held at 7:00 PM Thursday at the University Drive location. Funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Friday, October 6th. at St. Stephen Catholic Church, 2000 S. State Road 7, Miramar. Burial will follow at Hollywood Memorial Gardens. After the burial, friends and family will gather at the 6400 Pines Blvd. location. In lieu of flowers donations are requested to Habitat For Humanity or St. Stephen School.

Hi Boyds’
I’m so very sorry for your loss. I wish I could be there with all of you now. I can’t help but smile when I think of Don and all the memories — Wednesdays at Hooters, trips down to the Keys, listening to him talk about his days in the navy, how he met Katherine and swept her off her feet, working services with him and getting lost in the Coach down in Miami. There were so many good times and so many smiles.
Take care Don. And take care Boyd’s.
With Love,
Anna

Kathy, Patrick, Larry, Linda and family,
I am so sorry to hear that Don has passed away. He was truly a great man and an inspiration to have worked with. His energetic drive, desire to be involved and his incredible gift to make any family feel at ease were some of the amazingly unique gifts that God bestowed on Don. We have lost another one of the great pioneers of funeral service in Broward county, and he will be missed. May God give you all the peace to know that Don is home, and just around the corner, we shall meet again, and Don will be the one there to greet and welcome us.

Dear Kathy and family,
While attending the recent NFDA convention in Philadelphia, Ed Kalis told me of Don’s passing. My wife Chris and I will always remember the many good times we had with both you and Don at the conventions – sharing stories about Michigan and Florida and when I worked in Hollywood and was a student at Miami-Dade. Don was a fine and well respected funeral director and served his families and the profession well. He will be truly missed. You and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers. God’s blessings to you all.
