At the age of sixteen, she met the love of her life, Varughese (also known as ‘Acha’), and told her parents, “I either marry him or I won’t get married right now.” They were married for 73 years and raised seven beautiful children, with the help of her parents who lived with them. She was a housewife taking care of her children while her husband was away for work in Munnar. Her children grew up loving her delicious food and free spirit. She raised her children to be strong and independent, encouraging them to be themselves and do what makes them happy.
At the age of fifty-nine, she immigrated with her husband to Cooper City, Florida where she would ‘retire’. The word ‘retire’ is in quotes because she and Acha were given the responsibility of being the caregivers for their many rambunctious grandchildren. They lovingly cared for their grandchildren into their eighties so that their children could pursue their careers and make a living in the US.
Ammamma was very content staying at home, watching Malayalam shows, and chatting daily with her daughters about life. She was very particular about keeping herself, Acha, and her room meticulously clean. She also loved sharing stories from her life and had an amazing sense of humor – her smile, laughter, quick wit and commentary would often light up any room she was in.
Ammamma slipped and fell at the age of 43, fracturing her backbone. Then again, she slipped in 1993, fracturing her femur. She fell a few more times, slowly taking away her physical strength throughout the years. Although her physical strength declined, her mind stayed sharp, and her tongue even sharper. She often shared her opinions, whether they were easy to hear or not. Although she could be blunt, her intentions were pure, and for the happiness of her family.
Ammamma wanted nothing more than her grandchildren to be happy, and for them to get married and give her great grandchildren. She loved being among children – playing, holding and laughing with them.
She was united with her Heavenly Father at 1:50pm on January 14th, 2022, just five days after her husband passed, with her children and grandchildren by her side. She could not bear to live on this earth without Acha. She left in peace, with a smile on her face. She is survived by her 7 children and their spouses, 14 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren (listed below).
Ammamma’s beautiful life has left a large legacy of love and laughter that will carry on for generations. She will be greatly missed and always in our hearts. She is at peace in the presence and love of God now and for eternity.
