Andrew (Andy) Paul Backs, 90, passed away on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.  He was born September 10, 1931 in Ohio, the son of Joseph and Agnes Backs.  Andy grew up on the family farm in Ohio with his siblings.  He graduated from the University of Dayton in 1957.  In 1961 Andy married Janet McIntosh and they raised four children in Hollywood, Florida.

Andy survived by his wife Janet, son Stephen, daughter Andera, Son-in-law Mike, son Billy, Grandchildren Alan, Gabby, Michael, Ethan, and Bryan, siblings Marge Van Doorneveldt (Bob), Joan Wenning (Mark), and Barbara Monnig (Tom).  He was preceded in death by his son Terry, daughter-in-law Darsy (Stephen), parents Joseph and Agnes, his siblings Edna Backs, Irene Klosterman (Elmer), Mary Ann Waters (Frank), Ruth Brown (Francis), Charles Backs (Edith), Joe Backs (Ginny), Jim Backs (Faith), Dolores Sowar (Jack), and Sister Barbara Jean Backs C.PP.S.

Andy Backs lived an exemplary life worth modeling.  For 37 years, he worked for the United States Coast Guard as the Civilian Personnel Director for District Seven, receiving many awards and commendations for his outstanding performance.  He continuously gave back to the community as a member of the Nativity Parish Council, Knights of Columbus, Board of Directors at the YMCA, President of the Hollywood Hills Civic Association, Nativity Usher, The Southeastern Federal Recruiting Council, Federal Employment for People with Disabilities and many other organizations.

The Memorial Mass honoring Andrew Backs will be held at Nativity Catholic Church on Saturday, January 29, 2022 at 10:00 am.   A Celebration of his life will follow.

A tribute to the life of Andy Backs can be made through a donation in his memory to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research or Catholic Hospice and Palliative Care.
