A beautiful tribute to my brother Anthony “Tony” Campbell written by one of his childhood friends Basil Smith. Thank you Uncle Basil.
We have lost a very interesting son of Spanish Town. Anthony “Tony” Campbell died in Pembroke Pines, Florida on Wednesday, July 15. Tony had been ailing for some time.
He was Spanish Town’s greatest booster. No one loved that town more. It seemed that he always saw Spanish Town through the proverbial “rose colored glasses”, and if you started a story on Spanish Town, Tony would finish it. He had information about Spanish Town that no one else had..
Tony was born in Spanish Town, attended St. Joseph Roman Catholic elementary school before going on to Beckford and Smith/St. Jago High School.
Tony was possessed of an intellectual curiosity, especially for sports, that was legendary. I always called him the Spanish Town sports’ historian. But he was also a talented cricketer and footballer. He represented St. Jago at both Sunlight Cup cricket and Manning Cup football. He was easily, very easily, one of the better players at both sports.
He migrated to the U.K after high school and enlisted in the Royal Air Force. He continued in sports in the U.K and had quite a career as a club cricketer and community organizer..
Tony shared everything he knew. Ask him a cricket question and it was amazing how often he had the answer at hand. And if he didn’t, you could expect him to get you the answer. No wonder then that he got into coaching. He eventually became a certified sports coach in South Florida. This was in addition to a working career in Information Technology at the Department of Health with the Palm Beach County in Florida..
Tony is survived by his wife Marcia, two daughters Denise and Sharon, grandsons Ramaro and Jayden, siblings Noel, Pam, Angela, Gilbert, Jr., Terri and Grace.
Funeral arrangements are pending.

Brother Tony you were a humble man who dedicated your life to the service of others. You lived your life with integrity, honesty and values of the highest standard that were worth emulating. You were ever present ever ready, willing and able to give a helping hand. You gave us all the support we needed without any fanfare. You were like a “natural mystic”, we “never had to wait in vain for your love” for you “loved and treated us right”. Your love, care, kindness and loyalty went beyond the boundary. We will continue to honour your remarkable life with these memories that will be forever etched in our hearts.
