With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Arthur Walter “Art” Martineau II, lovingly known as “Big Art,” on January 23, 2025, at the age of 54. Surrounded by family and friends, Arthur passed peacefully, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of compassion, service, and unwavering dedication to his community and loved ones.
Born on October 31, 1970, in Queens, New York, Arthur was the only child of Juanita and Arthur Martineau Sr. Growing up in a challenging neighborhood, Arthur witnessed firsthand the struggles of those around him. In a community where many believed the only way out was through illicit means, Arthur chose a different path. He dreamed of creating change, focusing on helping children see brighter possibilities. This dream shaped his life’s mission to protect and uplift the most vulnerable.
In 1978, Arthur moved to Miami, Florida, to live with his grandparents, Nomoe and Myra Martineau, but he remained deeply connected to his New York roots, spending summers and holidays with his extended family. In Miami, he attended Church of the Visitation Catholic School and later graduated from Miami Norland Senior High School in 1988. At Norland, Arthur’s passion for football flourished, but what truly set him apart was his sense of justice. He was known for standing up for the little guy, as he despised bullies and always sought to protect and defend those who couldn’t defend themselves.
After high school, Arthur enlisted in the Air Force Reserve as a firefighter, proudly serving for four years. His professional journey in law enforcement began in 1995 when he became a state corrections officer, quickly rising to the rank of sergeant. In 1997, Arthur joined the Miami Beach Police Department as a detention officer, and on October 4, 1999, he achieved his goal of becoming a certified police officer with the department.
Arthur’s career was defined by integrity, courage, and an unmatched passion for community service. In 2010, he became the Executive Director of the Miami Beach Police Athletic League (PAL), a role that became the centerpiece of his life’s work. He devoted himself to mentoring and inspiring young people, ensuring they had the opportunities he once dreamed of as a child. Arthur’s dedication to PAL extended beyond Miami Beach when he founded the PALs of South Florida in 2019, where he served as president. His efforts touched countless lives, helping children overcome obstacles, embrace their potential, and thrive.
In addition to his professional achievements, Arthur was a loving family man. He adored his wife, Deborah Martineau, and treated her like a queen, showering her with love and care. His devotion to Deborah was a testament to his deep capacity for love and loyalty. He also shared a profound bond with his mother, Juanita Martineau, whom he cherished and admired throughout his life. Arthur’s love extended to everyone he encountered, as he made it his mission to lift others up and bring out the best in them.
Arthur was more than a protector and mentor—he was a man of joy, warmth, and generosity. He loved his family fiercely and took pride in his role as a father to his beautiful children: Artrena Martineau, Nichole Doty, Demetrius Smith, Alexis Martineau, and Arthur Walter Martineau Jr. He cherished every moment spent with his loved ones. His legacy is one of service, compassion, and a passion for building a better future, especially for children.
Arthur is survived by his wife, Deborah; his children; his mother, Juanita; and countless family members, friends, and colleagues who loved and respected him. His memory will forever inspire those who knew him to stand up for others, lead with kindness, and make a difference.
Rest in peace, Big Art. Your light, love, and legacy will live on in the hearts of all you touched.
