Betty Jean Smith was born Betty Jean Hyde to Joseph Robert Hyde and Lizzie Pitt Hyde on March 23, 1926 in Springfield, Tennessee.
She was the youngest of five siblings, four brothers and one sister (who passed away at an early age).
Betty lived on a farm all of her childhood. After graduating high school she worked at the Chandler’s Dept. Store and later as a teacher.
Her father became ill and she then returned home to help the family. After her father passed, Betty and her mother moved into town. They ran a boarding house and served meals. This is where she met her future husband, Warren Smith, Sr. He had lost his wife and had two daughters, Charlotte Jean and Betty Jo. After dating for a while, they married in September of 1955.
The Smith family moved from Tennessee to Kentucky and then in February of 1957 they moved again. This time to Florida.
Once in Florida Betty devoted herself to full time homemaking. Now with children ages 13, 10 and a newborn, Warren, Jr., she needed to concentrate on parenting. She became “MOM” to all of her children. Instead of a “Step-Mother” – she cared for all three the same.
The family moved four times before buying and settling in a home in Ft. Lauderdale, where she lived for 57 years.
Betty loved people and was a great listener. She always found time to sit and talk. You could confide in her and ask for advice. She centered her life around service to God and her family. Bible study was a part of her daily routine. She particularly loved the Psalms and would read them out loud every night, and at age 95 could recite most of them. One of her favorites was the 23rd Psalm.
She found great joy in the simplest of things. She would play for hours with the grandchildren. She was blessed with 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great grandchildren. Her oldest Granddaughter Sheri gave her the nickname “SUPERGRANNY,” and the name stuck with all the grandchildren. From then on she was “SuperGranny!”
In her senior years she enjoyed taking care of her many plants and flowers. She would “tinker” around the house and keep herself very busy. She loved history and read a good bit.
Betty Jean Smith at 95 years young lived a full and God-fearing life. She found joy every day! She taught her family a great deal about life, love, and the most important things. She was LOVED dearly by her family and friends. We can rejoice to know that she is now in heaven with the Lord. And although we will miss her, so very much, now we must strive to live a life worthy to join her someday in heaven. (2 Samuel 12:23)
