Charles “Charlie” Solano

February 04, 1952~March 13, 2024

Charles (Charlie) Solano, 72, of Hollywood, FL, passed away peacefully at home with his sister Lori by his side.

Born and raised in Malden, Massachusetts, Charlie was the son of Rita T. (Mucci) Solano and the late Edward Solano of Peabody, Massachusetts, previously of Malden, Massachusetts. Charlie was a graduate of Malden High class of 1970 and joined the US Navy in 1972-1975 assigned to the USS Newport News. In 1978, Charlie headed south to Florida and fell in love with the area. He began as a painter and then joined FedEx which he retired from after 29 years as a delivery driver. His “Huge” FedEx family gave him a sendoff just prior to his final days which brought Charlie so much joy, laughter and love.

Charlie’s passion for food such as “moms” Italian cooking, New England seafood and Peruvian dishes led him to travel. Charlie’s travel took him to his second home in “Little Italy” San Diego, which he visited in January with his dear friend Delores, many trips to Peru with Giovanna, Ecuador with Marian, Sicily with his cousin Kenny and many trips to his family home in Gloucester, Massachusetts for his favorite fried clams.

Charlie loved the Boston Red Sox and witnessed the 2013 World Series win at Fenway Park. He was a fan of all the Boston teams and loved to talk sports with all his friends. He will be missed by his Thursday afternoon golfers at Eco Golf Club which he enjoyed so much.

Charlie is survived and will be greatly missed by his mother Rita (Mucci) Solano, his brother’s Eddie and Ricky of Peabody, Massachusetts; his sister Lori Solano-McIntosh and her husband Patrick of Raymond New Hampshire.
He adored his nieces and nephew, Katrina Grillo and her husband Nick, Nicholas Solano, and Tara Grady; grandniece Julia Grillo and grandnephew Henry Grillo.

The family would like to Thank the amazing medical team at Miami VA, his primary nurse Leah at Hollywood VA, and the compassionate care he received from the special nurses at Continuum Care Hospice Services.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Continuum Care Health and to U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (https://www.cdceportal.va.gov/donate_online/)

Charlie will always be a very dear friend and shipmate. I’m still having difficulties with the news of his death. We both met in boot camp in October 1972. Company 490 was very much like watching Bill Murray in stripes. We lost our company commander early on to a drinking problem and never did get another one in time for graduation, very much like the movie. We both also served on the USS Newport News (CA-148) in 1973-74 for me. Charlie was a great shipmate and friend. I will always cherish the experience of knowing him. We will meet again my friend in the future. You are now with your dad in heaven. Hope to be up to see your family before the end of the year. Rest in Peace shipmate.
