It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Dr. Jean-André Estimé (Papa) on July 23rd, 2020 peacefully in his home. Thank you for all the telephone calls, texts, and prayers.
Dr. Jean-André Estimé was born on January 9th, 1928 in Verrettes, Haiti to Estilus Estimé and his wife Mercilia Massillon. He did his primary education in Verrettes and his secondary education at Petit Séminaire Collège Saint-Martial. Upon graduating from secondary school, Dr. Estimé received a full academic scholarship to study medicine at l’Université Paris-Sorbonne in France in 1948. He completed his residency in St. Louis, Missouri, specializing in urology at Saint Louis University. After his residency, Dr. Estimé received a contract from the World Health Organization (WHO) to run a hospital in Zaire (known today as the Democratic Republic of Congo).
In 1964, Dr. Estimé went back to Haiti and married Marie-Francoise Isaac, who predeceased him. He went back to Zaire to pursue his career in medicine. He worked for the WHO for 25 years, and due to the high demand for physicians in Zaire, he performed all aspects of medicine including clinical and administrative work.
In 1983, he moved to Miami Shores and opened his own medical practice. “Papa”, as he was affectionately known to his family, was a hard worker who enjoyed interacting with his patients; he worked until the age of eighty-six! Papa will be remembered for being present for monumental events in his children’s and grandchildren’s lives. He never missed the opportunity to share in such events as births, graduations, and birthdays. Some of the few things Papa enjoyed were traveling, good Haitian cooking, TV 5, MSNBC, CNN, professional sports, and NPR.
Papa is survived by his seven children: Eugénie Kiluba Kazadi (Georges), Jean-Marc Estimé (Dionne), Marie Gilberte Estime-Thompson (Ruben), Gilbert Jude-André Estimé (Claudine Martine), Kathleen Estimé-Peeples (Randall), Lilian Lessedjina, and Lorraine Estimé. And his thirteen grandchildren: Ruben Thompson Jr., Robert Thompson, Gabrielle Thompson, Cédric Kazadi, Steeven Kazadi, Kévin Kazadi, Brandon Estimé, Anthony Estimé, Kayla Chenet, Braulio Francois Alvarez, Braulio Isaac Alvarez, Christine Nicole Estimé and Gregori André Estimé. And a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, extended family members, and friends.
Papa will be remembered for his generosity and belief that family is everything. His desire was for everyone to strive for excellence, get the best education, and to live life to the fullest.

“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, no one understands his thoughts. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:28-31
May fond memories of your Papa, my Dear cousin, bring you comfort during this hard time in your life. Look back on all the good times you were able to have, and smile at the fact that you were able to share these before he passed away. Our hearts and prayers go out to you and the family. We are here for you,

With so few words you said so much. In your soft-spoken tone, you spoke so loudly. You were the father I longed for. A father that believed in family, education, and provided you with the tools to achieve. Your demeanor exuded strength, elegance, and resolve. I admired your intelligence. You always carried yourself in a dignified manner yet, you were always humble. I was so proud to call you Papa. I was so fortunate that your children were generous enough to share you with me. I vividly remember the day when you told my mother, that I belong to you as well. That sentiment was solidified by your actions. You were never too busy for me. You were always happy to see me. You took a hearty interest in my life without being intrusive. When people mistook me for your daughter I beamed, and you bragged! Papa, you hold a place in my heart that very few people could ever. I will always love you and cherish our memories.
