Eddie… Tony came home very happy from his first day after being transferred to the courthouse. He told me about his new boss and how much he liked him. They became immediate friends, bonding over their love of horses. Hard to believe that was 26-27 years ago.
I see Eddie’s smile, I hear his calm voice after he touches the sides of his chin when he’s decided what to say. Cool, chill, Let it roll. He and Tony had so much in common, I wish his demeanor was one!
Lester, Eddie, Diego, and all of the family, there are truly no words. Eddie is in heaven, he’s in our hearts, he has eternal peace. Us here left behind will suffer this loss, each in our own ways and in our own time. All of your family are all in our hearts, thoughts and prayers. May God see you through this, and may you always know that God have you friends to lean on, to help you walk this new path. ❤

The news of Eddie’s passing hit me very deeply. He was a gentle giant, a legend in the Broward County judicial government center and a cowboy to be envied. I enjoyed our visits and that tremendous smile every time I saw him. There are few people that leave such a big hole in the earth. Ride on Cowboy, Ride On.

Eddie and I became true friends when we both discovered our love of horses and the western lifestyle. He and his family which Laurie and I consider to be family traveled to Las Vegas with us for the National Finals Rodeo. Eddie and I went on an all day horseback riding trip while we were there. We enjoyed the beautiful outdoors and riding good horses and talked about horses during the whole ride. We went to Ocala for long weekends and would ride in the Ocala national forest and just enjoy our horses beneath us just having a great time talking and enjoying the beautiful peace and quiet. I could not have asked for a better friend, we were like oil and water in our tempermant. Eddie was always so laid back not getting riled up about anything and me, well not so much. But we always got along no matter what. I will miss my friend dearly and I’m heartbroken but I know that right now he’s on a beautiful horse riding in wide open spaces. I just hope that he’s got a good horse saddled up and ready for me when i see him again. Love you always my friend.

I remember a man like no other. Eddie Cruz, he is special a kind and understanding friend a brother. I will always remember the cool man who was my mentor a detective of the highest caliber, knew his job in a way that seasoned detectives strive to achieve. You will ever be with me and until we see each other again. Eddie would always say to me that as a detective in Homicide that we were doing Gods work, I hope god remember s that. Love you man!

Eddie and I became instant friends over 25 years ago instantly bonding over our mutual love of horses and the western lifestyle. Eddie and his family went to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas with Laurie and I several times and while we were there Eddie and I enjoyed a great all day long horseback ride in the beautiful Nevada desert. We enjoyed the beautiful outdoors and riding good horses, talking about horses and just relaxing. He and I would load up our horses and go up to Ocala for long weekends and ride in the National forest enjoying the peace and serenity of the sounds of the woods and the horses beneath us just having a great time. Eddie and I were like oil and water. He was always so laid back not letting anything bother him and I’m the complete opposite but we ALWAYS got along and never expected anything of each other except our great never ending friendship. I am truly heartbroken to have lost such a great friend. I know that right now he’s on a beautiful horse riding in the wide open beautiful outdoors and he better have a good horse saddled up and ready for me when i see him again. I miss you my friend.

I knew Eddie over 25 years. At 5AM every morning he would appear with a pot of water ready to make coffee for everyone. He was everyone’s friend and always spoke kindly about all.
Our conversations would be about how proud he was of his family, his experiences as a NY detective, his love of horses, rodeos, and ever so many things.
He would often ask me what it was like to a chief of police and what the headaches were. I told him that you had to live on Tylenol for the headaches. After Eddie retired, 5AM was never the same.
I’m so happy and proud to have known Eddie for so many years and to have so many fond memories.
‘Til we meet again

One of the greatest and unselfish man I have ever met. I had the privilege to start my civilian career with Major Cruz. I learned so much from him. The last couple of years I had the honest honor to be his trainee and shared so many…. I mean SO MANY laughs and great moments with Major Cruz. Never saw him lose it. He always handled chaos with calmness. He has the utmost respect of so many at the courthouse and he will continue to be a legend. I will continue to take care of what he left me, with as much desire to mirror his character, as possible. I am forever indebted to your family and if the Cruz family needs anything, I will make myself available. Thousands (no exaggeration) of people have been blessed to share his moments and learn from this great man. Love you Major, or as my daughters called you, Mr. Major Cruz.
