Haughton was like a brother to me. I have known him all of my life and cant really believe that he is no longer with us. Thank God we will see him again and now we all have an angel looking out for us.

Haughton / Smitty was more than just a friend, to me he was family. I was born just a little more than a month after him and grew up across the road from him at # 35. I only knew my birthday was close when Haughton told me that it was his birthday.

We went to Waterloo Basic School together & I remember just the two of us waiting until late every evening until somebody usually Haughtons father finished work and could come to get us.

We then went to Dunrobin Primary School together, Haughton was smarter than I was and so he was allowed to skip 1st Grade and go straight to the 2nd grade. Although we werent in the same grade we always played together at lunch and waited on each other to walk home from school together. We used to save our money and on the way to Stars Way we would pool our money and either buy and share a slice of melon or a hot dog at Shoppers Fair, we would always go in there to run around and play.

For the Common Entrance Exams Haughton picked for Georges and then Campion, although I picked the same two I reversed the order so we ended up at different schools, that was just about the time I moved off Stars Way and although we didnt see each other as often we remained close.

Fast forward to adult Haughton We played dominoes together about twice a month, every month for the last 10 years just up to the point where he migrated to Florida. It was always Eddie & Corey against Haughton and I. Although truth be told we mostly lost mostly haughtons fault we always played together, now I look back at it, it seems Haughton and I have been playing together all our lives.

Haughton was always eating but somehow managed to remain slim, as Jason pointed out one of his nicknames was bones. He loved to eat everything but I remember him always eating peanut butter and Ms Smith used to buy the biggest tub of peanut butter I have ever seen in my life. Haughton is the only person that could find patty and coco bread to buy at 10 o’clock in the night. All his life Haughton had a sinus problem and if you know Haughton you must have heard him at som point scratching his throat. Haughton kept a clean house and if you came to look for him you would always have to take off your shoes whenever you came to visit right until the day he went away.

He Eddie and I were all Altar Servers at Our Lady of the Angels Church together and when we all got too old to serve Haughton remained active and mentored and acted as advisor to the altar servers at church. Anybody that needed help could always turn to Haughton. When I was putting in a drywall ceiling in my house, I asked Haughton to help and he did so without hesitation. If you visited Haughton at Stars Way and stood outside at the gate with him you would understand the love people had for him. Everybody that passes his house knows him and would always say hello and share a laugh,I thought this amazing but thats Haughton. You can imagine how he was missed when he migrated but we who loved him knew he was seeking greener pastures.

Eddie Corey and i lost our domino spar and when we do play now its just the three of us. We all eagerly anticipated the day he would return for a visit.

When Haughton contacted us to say he had been sick and hospitalised we were all in shock. Haughton is relatively young and as long as I can remember was never really ill apart from a runny sinus. We all felt good to know that he was recovering nicely and he told me he was feeling well. Corey told us Haughton said he was trying to come to Jamaica in March, we would get to see our friend again plus Dominoes is always better with four people. Imagine how I am hurting now that Haughton has left us. Writing this is bringing tears to my eyes as I am missing my friend.

When he emailed after his illness I emailed him back and at the end I wrote friend for life. He wrote me back and at the end said the same thing. I take that back now, Haughton you will be my friend long after life has passed I promise I will remember you for as long as I have breath, to all his friends and family stay strong, remember Haughton how he was in life, always a joy to be around and it will help through this difficult period.

Kelly and Ms Smith be strong.

Haughton I love you

Your friend forever

To Kelly and Mrs. Smith, I extend my condolences, you will most likely remember me as Lisa Singh’s big sister. She talks about you guys all the time and remembers Haughton very fondly and speaks very highly of him. I felt compelled to extend my heartfelt condolences and to remind you that GOD is “the best knower” Haughton is sadly missed as I can see, but he’s better off and judging from what everyone says about him on this website, I bet he’s in heaven waiting for us all someday. Peace and blessings and “nuff” love.

Melody Walters.

PS Big up Kelly keep you head up.
