My grandmother was truly one of a kind. She was a strong, passionate, and outspoken woman. Born in Chile, she came to the United States as a young woman. She only spoke Spanish when she first arrived, but she learned English, studied American civics, and proudly became a United States citizen — one of her greatest accomplishments.
She was also an avid animal lover and had many wonderful pets throughout her life, including Tiger the boxer, Samantha the poodle, a cat named Mickey, Freeway the Shih Tzu, Rubbie Dee, and Ozzie the lovebirds.
I can remember all the moments we shared together — the fun times, dinners, shopping trips, and family vacations. She and my grandpa were always present, and there was always a story behind every family event that could make you laugh.
My grandmother loved shows like I Love Lucy and would laugh so loud that she could be heard from another room. She loved her fruits, especially lemons. Her favorite color was yellow, and she loved Italian food. She traveled all over the world with my grandfather and saw some of the most amazing places in her lifetime. She also loved Disney World as much as I do, and I will always cherish those family trips we took together.
Some of my favorite times with my grandparents were spent in my college years. I would often visit them in the afternoons, spend time with them, hear their stories, and catch up on what they were up to. I didn’t realize it then, but those would become some of my last memories with them.
I am grateful for the time I had with my grandparents. I will truly miss you, Grandma, and think of you often. I promise to carry on our family traditions, like Christmas Eve dinner, and travel the world of EPCOT with you in mind. Thank you for the memories, the laughter, and the family stories. You’ll always have a place in my heart.
Love,
Allison Coleas
