Helen Patricia Cowan Byrne passed away on June 7, 2022, at the age of 88 in Cooper City, Florida after a long illness. She was surrounded in love by her cherished husband and children who will continue to honor her memory by living their lives the way she taught them.
She was born to John and Helen Cowan on December 26th, 1933, in Chester, PA. At seventeen, Helen attended St. Joseph Hospital, a Catholic nursing school in Philadelphia, to become a Registered Nurse. She immediately began caring for all who came before her. Her career took her to Taiwan, Indonesia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Florida.
She met her future husband through friends and married Lawrence Richard Byrne of Ventnor City, New Jersey on June 9th, 1956, and so began her precious family. Helen gave birth to eight children in ten years, relishing every single moment of the daily chaos. Her surviving children are Elaine Salow (Alex), Jeanne Micolucci (Vic), Mary Funk (Mike), James Byrne, Kathy/Nancy Baker, Karen Pintado, and Lawrence Byrne Jr. (Magda). One deceased child was Patricia Byrne. Helen was particularly passionate about children and loved to be in their presence. She made every child feel as though they were special, unique, and her favorite person. Helen and Larry have thirteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, many of whom are also nurses.
Although she was a worldwide traveler, Helen most enjoyed the simplest pleasures, including family time at home in Miami Dade, her faith in God, playing cards, and other games. She was happiest when she was telling children riddles, or hosting Easter egg hunts and birthday parties. Helen always carried a beautiful light and joy with her, along with a witty sense of humor. She loved life and all that it offered and believed that good deeds are rewarded in heaven.
Helen Byrne will be honored with a funeral mass at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, 5601 S. Flamingo Rd, Southwest Ranches, FL 33330 on Saturday, June 25th at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, Helen would appreciate it if you performed an unsolicited act of kindness for an unfortunate soul.

This is a beautiful tribute to a beautiful person. Helen was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and she and Larry had one of the closest bonds imaginable. I remember when they had just started dating. Their delight in each other was so evident and they shared such a delicious sense of humor and rollicking joy in life. I loved my sister-in-law–everybody did–and see her in my mind’s eye as the young, vibrant, and smiling girl she always was.

Mrs. Byrne 💗
I have fond memories of seeing you in the kitchen (always), on my way to Karen’s room. You never wanted me to wake her 😂. Said she needed her sleep ! I want to thank you for bringing Karen into this world, as well as alllllll of your children …, but Karen is my FAVE ♥️ May you rest in sweet, eternal peace.

MomMom,
You were selfless, kindhearted and I am blessed you were in my life. I was Amber’s annoying bestie, who never went home and still you always made me feel welcomed…I can picture your smiling face like it was just yesterday. You were the grandmother I always wanted! I know you are watching over your beautiful family, helping them find peace after losing you. Thank you, MomMom for everything.
Love always,
Jackie 💕🙏
