Hilda was born in the mountain town of Cidra, Puerto Rico on February 8, 1932. She was the eighth child born of 18 children. Her Father was Fructuoso Rolon Rodriguez and her mother was Rita Ortiz Rodriguez. Her father was a landowner and raised his large family on their farm which cultivated tobacco, coffee, plantains, and other harvests. They also raised livestock which they sold to the surrounding towns.
At the age of 14, Hilda was sent to New York City where she lived with relatives and there completed her high school diploma. After school she worked as a seamstress, but eventually went on to study as a hairdresser in noted beauty academy.
At the age of 22, she met Mr. Albert Garcia Veve at a local dance hall and it was love at first sight. After a time of courting they were married in 1956. Albert worked in insurance and after 20 years living in NYC, they moved to San Juan Puerto Rico. Albert continued as an insurance agent and Hilda worked as a hairdresser at the large hotels in San Juan, mostly attending tourists since she was fluent also in English. Hilda and Albert had no children of their own, but they did help raise many nieces and nephews over the years.
The couple retired from their jobs in 1995 and in 1998 moved to Davie, Florida. Albert passed away in 2013 and Hilda’s large family came to visit her many times during the ensuing years.
On January 7th, 2023, Hilda suffered a heart attack while at home when in the hospital and eventually passed the following morning at 5:30am. She is remembered as a caring loving sister, wife and aunt to her many relatives and friends.
Visitation will take place on Friday, January 13, 2023, from 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM with a Prayer Service at 1:00 PM at Boyd-Panciera Family Funeral Care, University Drive Chapel.
