Iris Oddman (nee Dunn) passed away peacefully at home, in the early afternoon of December 14, 2022, at the age of 96, surrounded by her youngest son and daughter.
She was born in the Shortwood area of St. Andrew, Jamaica to the late David and Victoria (Sis) Dunn. She is preceded in death by her husband Winston Oddman. Iris is survived by her children — Patrick Oliver, Olive, Courtney (Bruce), Royston (Richie), and Andrea (Carla), son-in law Patrick — eight grandchildren — Stacey, Gabrielle, Nikita, Andreu, Keri-Ann, Courtnay, Brandon, and Ryun — and one great-grandson, Kai.
Iris attended St. John’s and Merl Grove schools in St. Andrew, Jamaica. She was a well-renowned dressmaker in her community before she became a businesswoman in opening a retail store in the Shortwood area of St. Andrew, which she ran for more than twenty years, growing it into a very successful business and through it became a household name as not only a businesswoman, but also a philanthropist in the area.
She was instrumental in the education of a large number of children from the community by donating uniforms and other things for their benefit.
After selling her business in Jamaica, she migrated to the US in the late 70s and settled in the Miami area, where she briefly worked in the medical field, until retirement. As a retiree she kept busy in the church, including being a member of the choir. Iris also actively attended Focal Point Community Center and many social events. She was always willing to lend a helping hand and ear and gave advice to family and friends.
A service of thanksgiving and a celebration of Iris’ life will be held at The Bridge Church (9300 Pembroke Road, Miramar, FL 33025) on Friday, January 6, 2023 at 4pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to The Bridge Church. For those who are unable to come in-person, the service can be viewed via live streaming at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ri71zuCnHgM
