Dr. Jane Elizabeth Mussey, DVM
Jane passed from this life on May 13th, 2025 after a three year epic fight with a rare form of leukemia and complications from a bone marrow transplant and graft vs. host disease. She was
71.

Jane was born July 26th, 1953 to Dr. William Mussey and Harriet Mussey (nee Doty) in Champaign, IL. She was raised in Madison, WI, attended Memorial High School and was among the first graduating class (‘71) from Malcolm Shabazz High School (East). She attended UW-Green Bay and University Of Iowa, before returning to UW-Madison where she obtained her B.Sc. in wildlife ecology in 1982. In 1986 Jane graduated as Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University at Ames.

She met John Aue at UW-Green Bay in 1972 and they married in 1978. Upon becoming a Veterinarian, Jane and John moved to Richland County, WI in 1987. Jane worked as a district
Veterinarian for USDA APHIS. Later she accepted a position with USDA APHIS VS as the officer responsible for approving the import/export of animals and animal products for the state
of Wisconsin. In 1992 Jane and John began growing a wide range of specialty potatoes and other crops on their farm Butter Mountain Potatoes, together with their two young sons.

When not working for USDA or farming, she helped homeschool their sons, taking great pride and pleasure in exposing them to a wide and varied world of music, theatre, science, community
service, and political engagement. She gained immeasurable pleasure from singing with family and friends, playing piano, learning new instruments, and was forever rescuing and fostering
abandoned or forsaken animals of all sorts. After retirement from the USDA, Jane decided to pursue human medicine, returning to school to become a licensed dietician, though sadly, she
fell ill before she could put her new degree to use.

In 2021 Jane reconnected with Craig Huegel who she’d known from elementary school. She moved to Tampa, FL shortly thereafter and Craig and she became the loves of each others
lives. They kindled their connection with their love of music and the natural world. In what were her final years they hiked and traveled together, and hosted house concerts. Although she never
fell in love with Florida, she loved Craig and his family deeply, and in opening their lives to her she found a new home.

Craig was there for every minute of her diagnosis and treatment; neither he nor John nor her sons nor her sister Andrea ever gave up on her through the dark times ahead. Even as Jane’s
body wilted, her caring for her loved ones, her mental fortitude, and her desire to strive and live continued undimmed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother David Mussey, and extended family and
friends too numerous to count.

She is survived by her partner Craig Huegel, her children Owen and Vaughan Aue, her husband John Aue, siblings Andrea Jones and Charlie Mussey, numerous nieces and nephews, and
countless extended family and friends.

Jane was an intense person: she could be quick to anger, did not suffer many fools gladly, and could be a PITA to the people who were closest to her, but she was incredibly quick witted; with
infinite curiosity and kindness. She loved music, science, and the pursuit of social equity. She never stopped learning. Despite all her knowledge of the world, she never lost hope in humanity.
To the best of her abilities, she passed her most admirable traits on to her children and attempted to inspire them in anyone who would listen.

Although she wished to be buried on the family farm or have her body used for research into her condition, circumstances had other plans. She donated her body to the Medical School of Miami
that the next generation might learn. A celebration of life will be held likely later this year. Specifics determined and announced later: anyone wishing to attend can contact the family or
preferably send an email to jemussey.dvm@gmail.com.
