JB Jones

August 05, 1931~December 17, 2018

JB Jones Sr., 87, born in 1931 at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, FL, and took his last breath on earth Monday December 17th, 2018 at 9:30 AM.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Gertrude Jones (His high school sweetheart), and four of his children. Richard Jones (Davie), Cary Jones (Margate), Carol Roberts (Winter Garden), Darrell Jones (Deceased), and JB Jones Jr. (Stuart), as well as eight grand- children and four great-grandchildren.

J.B. did his part for the baby-boomers by having their five children, with one set of twins, in a three and a half year period.

JB Jones Sr. served his country during the Korean war where he was wounded on Pork Chop Hill and was later honored with the Purple Heart. While recovering from his injuries, he learned how to clear a mountain side with explosives.  That would one day lead him to the career he loved, “Blowing stuff up”… in the film industry.

His career in the South Florida film and entertainment industry spanned more than five decades. His work included, The Jackie Gleason Show, Flipper, Gentle Ben, and later Miami Vice. He supervised special effects on feature films such as Cape Fear, Porky’s Revenge, and Cocoon II. This along with the many T.V. commercials and his lighting business made him a legend and a real pioneer in his trade.

JB will be buried at Hollywood Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Hollywood, Florida, with military honors. Visitation will take place Friday, December 21st, from 7:00-10:00 PM  with Tribute of a Lifetime Service at 8:30 PM at Boyd-Panciera Family Funeral Care, Hollywood Boulevard Chapel. Funeral Service will be Saturday, December 22nd, 11:00 AM at Pines Baptist Church, prior to the honors and burial.

In lieu of flowers, donations would be most appreciated to Pines Baptist Church, 800 NW 102nd Avenue, Pembroke Pines, FL 33026.

Very sorry to hear this news. My mother Linda McGowan and JB worked on many film and TV projects over many years. I was always in awe of their friendship and the hard work and humor they brought with them to each job. My mother was always laughing like crazy when JB would go off on those dam… you know what… producers, directors, etc. JB was the best! On behalf of Linda’s family, we treasure the memory of JB and his beautiful family and offer our love at this difficult time.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Jones family. We all grew up together and I am so sorry for the loss of such a wonderful man. He was easily my mom’s best supporter in the business and together they helped build the foundation for the Miami film industry. J.B. will be greatly missed by so many friends and family for his infectious smile, his quick sense of humor and his penchant for enjoying life to the fullest. Here’s to a life well-lived. We’ll remember you always J.B. Jones.
