John is a icon at HP. He created the whole data/AI story in this iconic company.
I first met John 5 years back and in the first meeting itself, his energy was infectious.
Over the years, I spent many interesting trips, lunches and dinners with him – not only discussing work, but a lot of food and great food places in Houston. I am certainly going to remember him and miss him each time – I visit Peli Peli and Paul’s Pizza etc.

John was larger than life and was so passionate at work and everything he did. We are all going to miss him immensely at HP!

I only knew John for a short period, but he was kind enough to be my mentor. We spent hours, just nerding out on technology. Talking to John was one of those things where we would lose all track of time and spill over into whatever meeting was planned next in the day.

John was an absolute legend within HP.

He will absolutely be missed.

John had such a big heart and cared for and loved his friends at HP, even if he didn’t always say it. He showed it and said it in how he invested in the careers and well being of so many of his colleagues at HP. There are countless engineers who can point to John’s friendship, mentoring, encouragement, and guidance, as an integral part of their growth personally and professionally within HP, myself included. Have many fond memories of John’s passion for his work, but also his fighting for and defending his teammates and friends. Both in the day to day work, and in supporting their career growth. I can just imagine similar stories from his teammates on the Florida Gators football team. Truly valued John’s friendship, caring, humor, and straight truth. Am lucky to have worked with John for 10+ years together. I and so many others will be “missin” John, just like he missed that “g” all these years 🙂 John’s impact, voice, and friendship will be with us for many years in HP and beyond. We love you John.

I was greatly saddened to hear of John’s passing. John left a legacy at Compaq and HP as I am sure he did in his personal life as well. John was brilliant but also kind and steadfast in wanting to do the right thing at all times for HP and our customers. John and I worked together for 20+years and were fully aligned most of the time but also at opposite ends of the spectrum on occasion. It was probably during these times of differing opinion that I appreciated John the most; he could argue prolifically and with much persuasion but also listen to you and sincerely understand your point of view. He was always gracious and never belittling or unkind and always patient to educate you, never growing impatient. I will always remember John’s attitude, constant smile and hearty laugh. It was my good fortune to know him, and work alongside him, His impact at work will continue to carry on for many years. May you rest in peace, John.

“When you speak of John, one thing that comes to mind is a wide smile on his face, his engaged + intense eyes and his attention that encourages you to go deeper into the matter or any matter.” John was a true leader and always had an engaging session about any specific or random topic. I did not believe it for the first time when I read the news. I read it again and was shocked to notice this news about John. You will be missed badly, John. My heartfelt condolence and to the family. Rest in Peace John.

I am heartbroken to read about John’s passing. John was so well respected by his peers and his leadership and was a great inspiration to many who engaged with him, including me. I “knew” John well before I “met” John because of the various activities with which he was involved in at HP. I recently met with John to gather some historical context on a topic and get some advice and he was so full of energy and enthusiasm… I had no idea he was ill. No doubt that he will be immensely missed by all who knew him both in his professional and personal life. We need more John’s in this world. We really, really do. To John, rest well. To John’s family and friends, please accept my most sincere condolences. Be good to yourselves during this difficult time.

Incredibly sad and shocked by this news. My sincere condolences are with Landry family and all of John’s loved ones, and my prayers are with John as he travels to everlasting home. I have known John since late 1990 when we worked under a common architecture group. During that time, John was leading a visionary approach of creating a system on a chip (SoC) for our platforms. I had the pleasure of working closely with John and learned a lot from him. John was a considerate and decent human being and a great technology leader. He single handedly reformed our PC quality platform though his vision and work with HP software assistant, still the most widely deployed HP software solution in the market… He started and initiated data analytics work I side PS and helped create a path for all things analytics in HP. We will miss you John. Rest In Peace.

I am so saddened that John left us. During the 10+ years I worked with him I saw first hand how visionary and passionate he was. He helped me grow as an engineer and as a manager. He was always great to brainstorming with him as he was full of idea and always open to new suggestions. His contributions to the PC world will last for a long time. As a human being he was kind, caring and was always looking for helping his teammates and friends. I am truly sorry for John’s children, family and friends. He will be missed.

Very, very sad to hear of John’s passing. I worked with him on several efforts over the years and always found him to be the consummate professional who had a well-reasoned point of view and could share it very articulately. Very visionary but also very practical – a rare combination. He was also very willing to make time for others and help guide them. Truly a gem. Rest in Peace, John.

Out for a walk one evening earlier this year, I got a call from John. He had this idea that we wanted me to vet and suggest next steps. This typified John. Enthusiastic, energetic, smiling and brimming with ideas and actions. Last December, just before Christmas, John had us all gathered in Houston to focus domain and data related course of action, I consider myself fortunate to have been his colleague and his friend. He helped us craft our data sciences community, and relentlessly contributed to make us better.

I am deeply saddened, but I and others will take solace in the fact that we were fortunate in this life to have been in his company.

Our thoughts and prayers for John and his family.

Although I worked closely with John only for one year on AI – machine reasoning, I have great respect for John. We graduated from the same University, and I know how talented an athlete he must be for being able to play college football for a National Championship Team. In addition to his achievement in sport, John also excelled in his computer profession and became an HP Fellow. I was immensely impressed by his deep domain knowledge, like in notebook battery characteristics. John, I will miss your smile and encouragement.

Deepest sympathies to John’s family. I had the great opportunity to work with John briefly at HP and from the day we met and every encounter following, John was truly amazing. Always kind and matter-of-fact without an ounce of arrogance for his extreme knowledge on anything we would discuss. He taught me many things in our brief encounters and I will forever be grateful. Thoughts are with John’s entire family and may John forever rest in peace.

My condolences to John’s family. A few years ago when I was getting my master’s degree in data analytics, and I needed some help and guidance. I reached out to John, and I did not really expecting anything since he does not know me personally, and is likely very busy himself. Not only he responded to me immediately, he is so supportive and helpful to me throughout my degree program. I am forever grateful.

Very sad to hear of John’s passing though he’s certainly at peace now. My heart goes out to his family during this time. I’ve known John since the mid-80’s when we worked together at IBM in Boca Raton, FL. You could say that John led the way for several of us to leave IBM and join Compaq in 1988. John and his family were long time neighbors of ours and I have many memories of John at work and socially. John was certainly one of a kind.

Only briefly knew John, however I was still the beneficiary of John’s many strengths. He was an influential steward of the industry – he cared and acted on technology that would improve peoples lives. John acted daily on helping other folks in the tech industry to do more, to grow and to contribute more. John always played hard and worked hard – right up to the end. He was always transforming and growing.

John was unique, a big guy in so many ways. His contributions to HP are legendary, his impact on peoples’ lives obvious. I’m having trouble accepting that John, with his indomitable energy and enthusiasm, could have his fire on this Earth extinguished. Always thinking big, pushing himself and those around him to strive harder and achieve more, he was a force. Long ago I ran across a quote that I associated immediately with John, “Better to have a wild stallion that you have to rein in now and then than a donkey that you have to kick in the ass to get it moving.” John will always be my model of a stallion. I wish his family the strength to accept that he’s off on a great trail ride.
