Joseph Ronald Varner, Jr.

August 27, 1960 – July 1, 2023

Joseph “Joey” Ronald Varner, Jr was born in Miami, FL, August 27, 1960. After a long battle with his health, Joey went home to be with his Savior on July 1, 2023. He spent most of his life in Florida and moved to North Carolina in 2016. Joey’s passion was being on the water and the outdoors. Whether fishing in the Atlantic Ocean, shrimping and lobstering in Biscayne Bay, or frogging in the Florida Everglades, he raised his only son, Jesse, to be an avid fisherman and outdoorsman. This is where they spent their most memorable days. One story that Jesse would like to share is from when he was in 7th grade and got sent to the principal’s office. The principal had to make that call every kid dreads – the phone call to your parents. The principal was greeted by an answering machine message, which stated, “I’m not home right now…I could be out catching a fish or killing a deer…or at the bar drinking a beer…I could be at Jai-alai or at the dogs…or I could be in the glades gigging some frogs. So leave your name, number and time…or if you would like, leave me a rhyme.” The principle just looked at Jesse and said, “Get back to class.” This story pretty much describes Joey’s sense of humor. He had a seemingly endless supply of quick wit, and could sit around for hours telling jokes. Joey will be remembered as a man’s man, and a friend’s friend.

Joey is a beloved father and grandfather. He loved spending time with his grandkids, and he got to spend a lot of time with them over the last few years. Joey is preceded in death by his mother, Virginia, his sister Lori, and his nephew, Joshua. He is survived by his father, Ronnie, his sister, Lisa Roberts, his son and daughter-in-law, Jesse and Kerry, and his grandchildren, Caroline and Finn. He also leaves behind nieces and nephews Annie Varner, Molboro “Cece” Roberts, Mallory Roberts, Joyce Marie Cohen, and Dennis Davenport.

I am so saddened by this. Joey was a dear friend to me. Always picking on me and making me laugh. We had many drinks together and I loved him so much. Just like Jesse, Joey had a contagious smile and boy could they fish. I will cherish the memories forever. Joey you will be missed.

So sorry to hear of your loss. He was a good guy that had some problems that he had to deal with and I knew him for quite a few years. He went air boating with my late husband, Walter and my Lake son, Steven Bizzell now they can all be together up there and talk about hunting and fishing Ronnie I’m very sorry about your son. I know how it feels to lose two grown children they’re not supposed to go before us. I pray that that Jesus in the Lord wrap your family in their arms to help you get through this hard and sad time. God bless Frances Bizzell Waelens.

Joey was one of the good guys. I knew him for close to 60 years. We grew up together with my brothers and other kids from the neighborhood. He had good memories of going fishing with my brother and my grandfather. Just before we got a hurricane a few years ago most of the stores in S. Florida were out of water. Joey asked if we needed any help.. We were completely prepared for it except I couldn’t find water. Joey told me that he was going to N. Carolina and would be bringing back a lot of water. He offered to bring gallon jugs of water for me and I accepted his offer. When I met with him to get the water, he had gallons and gallons of it in the bed of his trunk.. I don’t know many people that would do something that helpful. He was a very thoughtful and helpful guy. Joey was loved by so many people and he will be missed a lot..

Joey will be missed. There should be more people just like him. He had such a big heart. He use to call me about Randy and tell me what he was up to and what should he do. I always knew when Joey called my cell, he was always worried about someone else. RIP Joey ❤️

I met Joey in the Transplant center, both of us recovering from Liver Transplant.
We hit it off immediately, Laurie and I loved him right away.
Joey got bumped once for a liver and apparently I got it. He always said, “ got my liver Stone” 😂
It’s been five years since our transplant. I miss you brother, and I’m sorry I just found out today. Till we see each other again, fair winds.
