Corine –

One of our fondest memories of Louie was when he told you not to look in the suitcase…you did … too funny! Although we didn’t always keep in touch, memories of you and Louie will always be with us!

Please accept our condolances to you and your children, and know that Louie is watching over all of you. God Bless.

Louie Cruz was my friend for over forty years: he was a colleague in the U.S.Secret service for twenty of those years.I worked with him closely on many occasions, usually as a “covering ” agent while he acted in various assignments, invariably dangerous in the capacity of an undercover agent. Those assignments bonded us and our colleagues in the Miami Field Office together in a very tight group.Louie was extremely effective as an undercover agent causing many a counterfeiter to go to federal prison.Louie was also a student of the Spanish language and by listening to a brief conversation, could discern the dialect spoken,i.e.Columbian or Venezuelan, Argentinean or Peruvian. That skill was most beneficial to our investigative mission.

Before I met him, he had served in the U.S.Air Force, the U.S. Customs and had married Corrine. He often remarked that his family was the most important part of his life.He was a credit to his country and his family. He was my friend and I will miss him.

Phil Lindsley said it better than I could have. Louie’s reputation in the Secret Service was legendary. I am most grateful for Louie’s patience with me as a brand new agent in 1976. He helped me write my very first criminal complaint for a check forger. He was always a friend and someone to talk to. I will echo what Phil said about Louie’s dedication to his family. It left a lasting impression on me. He was truly one of a kind. He will be missed.

“Louie” was an important mentor in my learning the ways of “the street” when I became an agent in the Miami office in the early 70s. He was always willing to answer questions and provide guidance, and he was a veteran agent who could “walk the walk.” One vivid recollection I have is how easily he could go from holding a cup of coffee and rubbing his mustache one minute, and go undercover the next. It was my privilege to have known the man. I am saddened by his passing, and I offer my condolence to his family.
