To Tony, Natalia, Marco and Sylvie sending you hugs and love in your time of need. So sorry for your loss.
To my Big Sister wherever you are:
Dear Big Sister, Being so much younger than you created so many advantages. I remember loving every opportunity I was given to visit you, wherever you were residing, usually with our beloved parents. I admired your love and passion for horses. Over time watching women’s professional soccer brought us together. I will miss you so much and I love you wherever you are now. Love you so much, Mary Laura

I called her Maggie, Mags, even Magpie.
She was my big sister.

Of course everyone knew of her love of Horses and the magnetic pull they had on shaping her life and what led her to be in Saratoga.

I spent about 10 years total in Albany having attended college there.
Margaret lived in Saratoga for a number of years which isn’t very far from Albany so we did meet up fairly regularly.
She was always a nurturing sister, making sure I was ok and had what I needed.
She also ended up being the only one who attended my college graduation ceremony.

She was there for me during the stress that comes with being a young adult and finding your way in the world.
If I was upset I’d drive to her place in Saratoga and she would make me dinner, we’d talk and talk, then I would stay over; she gave me the freshest smelling sheets, blanket and the world felt safe again. That is actually when you know how important it is to be near family or people who care.

We also ended up sharing one of my Albany apartments for while.
Both Tony and Margaret lived with with me before moving to Florida. She was the best to have around because she cooked and cleaned like nobody’s business.
She gave me a barn kitten who stayed with me for like15-17 yrs, my Pippin.

Marg and Tony moved to FLA and I moved back down state to pursue a degree. For so many years, Marg and sometimes Natalia too, would visit me almost annually in NY
We did lots of fun things together such as: Harry Potter World, Cirque de soleil,
Rennassaince fair in Sleepy Hollow and more.

Funny story:
One of our Summertime events I did with both her and Natalia visiting was driving into NYC in my then new car.
We went Shopping at Zabars which is a fabulous market in NYC. We all bought some goodies for later, parked the car, went to dinner, then a show-the Cirque de Soleil.

When we came out after the show and picked up the car from garage, the valet brought the car super fast.
We were delighted it came so fast, got in and took off.
Within 5 minutes we all noticed a putrid smell, not sure putrid was heinous enough to describe it.

We opened the car windows while driving and somehow that made the smell worse.
We all held our noses the whole way home. I was miffed, thinking the parking valet stunk up my car.

As soon as we were back at my house, I told my husband what happened and that we thought the parking valet defiled the car and left a heinous odor in there.

Next morning Frank my husband comes in from my car with something in his hand exclaiming, I found the culprit causing the smell in the back trunk. We were all aghast, really? What was it?
He came in with a melted mass of Asiago cheese that Natalia got that went bad from the intense summer heat in the parking garage.

Visits continued until she could no longer physicallytravel safely due to progressing disease.

We had a lot of laughs because she could really be a lot of fun, even when we carpooled home through insane holiday traffic from upstate for Thanksgiving gatherings.
We’d be stuck in traffic and we came up with a phrase to cope with it, we’d say, The traffics gonna breeeeeaaaak, it’s gonna gonna breeeeaaask over and over again then laugh and laugh.

And when we shopped together or even relayed solo shopoholic episodes we adopted another silly saying that only we two shared.
Shopping shopping shopping shopping sales! Sales!

No matter what we did, we made it fun and I will always have those fond memories and more. Rest in peace big sister.

I have many warm memories of Margaret. I can still picture the first time I saw her, as if only yesterday, not when she was about seven years old. I was sitting in the back of the school bus with her older brother, Marty, on my way for my first visit to his house. “Who is the girl up front that keeps turning around to look at us? In his matter-of-fact voice, Marty replied, “oh, that’s just my sister, Margaret.” Long brown hair and big brown eyes. I want to now tell Margaret’s loved ones of another vivid memory, as clear as a cloudless, blue sky. You see, I set Margaret on the path that led her to Tony. It was a bit of a rocky path but I was, and still am, pleased of where that winding path took her. Upon graduating from college, I began working for Billy Turner at Belmont Racetrack. One summer day, when visiting my family in St.James, I paid one of my customary unannounced visits to see Owen and Pat. There was Margaret, a recent but unemployed college graduate, sitting on a kitchen chair. We spoke briefly and I said, “I can get you a job walking hots for Billy.” As is so aptly said, the rest is history. For about five years, we worked together at the track. What fun we had. Every August, we shipped to Saratoga for the summer meet. We visited galleries together, for we both loved art. Margaret had a great smile and an infectious laugh that often brought up to the floor. She became a good friend to Billy and his wife, Barbara. She even lived in their house for a spell. I must confess that I stopped visiting Pat and Owen for a while, feeling that I would have to apologize for the path I had set Margaret upon. Being a racetracker was not an easy profession. Back then, we worked a 7 day week, including holidays. Still, while at Belmont, and with Billy’s help, Margaret became the first female clocker to work there, if not the first female clocker in the country. For when we worked at the track, woman were just starting to break down the gender barrier so endemic in that world, one overflowing with sexual harassment. Indeed, FBI agents would appear in cars, and speak with me about the atmosphere at the track and the long work hours. My years with Margaret passed too quickly before. the winds of change blew us apart. I went to law school, and would learn from afar of Tony, their marriage, their daughter, whom I met only once. Needless to say, I started visiting Pat and Owen again. Margaret had successfully navigated the twists and the turns, and found true happiness. How Margaret loved to smile. Never bigger than when her granddaughter would ride on her lap, when in her wheelchair. Thank you Margaret, for the part you played in my life. No one could have played it better. I only wish I could tell you that your son-in-law is an exceptional speaker, and that he would be a good attorney.
