Marianne loved her family more than life itself; they were her everything. She was a devout mom, and she didn’t have easy kids. She sacrificed so that her kids could have the best, Private schools, boats, horses. We had Ballet, Karate, music and tennis lessons. She took us to our football and baseball games. As her cousin Billy would say, she is the matriarch of our family; she’s the glue that keeps us together!
She was a dear friend, mentor, and counselor to many as her compassion, empathy and generosity was incomparable. She would blindly give to anything that had a picture of a hungry child. When the name Marianne Cook is said, the response was always about her strength and determination. Our mom was a thoughtful and serious, yet feisty, funny and a practical joker. She loved to be around family and friends; her laugh is so memorable and so contagious she could make you pee.in your pants.
She loved to travel often jumping a plane to Cuba (pre-Castro). She traveled to Europe numerous times, and later in life on cruises with her grandchildren. She had a cabin in N. Carolina and loved being in the mountains every summer with family. Marianne had an exceptional life: She was a Playboy bunny and owned a water ski school. In the early 60’s she managed bands that copied the Motown sound. She would do reviews with Mom’s Mabley and Jackie Wilson. One time the clan showed up and they had to lock themselves in the auditorium for hours. She owned a butcher shop and a bar. She modeled for print ads and had an antique shop; and she imported exotic woods from around the world. She went back to school and received her PhD. in psychology. She then went into the field of substance abuse, something that plagued her family. She worked at Anon-anew, was the Clinical Director for the Miccosukee Tribe. She went into private practice and 25 years ago opened Summer House with her family, she stayed on as a consultant. Her son John made a necklace for her that read IDTA “I Did That Already” Nothing was better than the holidays. Halloween was fun time; she would dress up and loved that no one knew who she was. Thanksgiving was always 25-30 families, friends and co-workers. But nothing was better than Christmas; every inch of her house was decorated inside and out. She had pure joy watching her family open their presents.
Marianne out lived two husbands: Ronald Ryan and John Clarence Cook.
She resided with her life partner of 28 years Edward Gallagher. She was mother to Ruth Ann “Rootie” Cook, and her sons Ronald “Ronnie”, Daniel “Danny” and John. Her loving grandchildren: Ron Jon, Danielle”Dani Girl” Cook, John C “Johnny Boy” Cook, John “Jack “Cook, Marianne Cook, Daniel Cook and Ruth Ann “Ruthie” Cook, and her Dear friend Karen Lizardo. Marianne’s donated often to the Christian Appalachian Project.
