Marie Lourdes Louis

April 26, 1960~November 30, 2022

Marie Lourdes Louis was born on the beautiful island of  Île de La Tortue, Haiti, on April 26, 1960, to Theodule Mettelus and Dieuvela Coicou (both deceased). Marie’s parents were very protective of her as their only child. They built a  fortress around their princess. Île de La Tortue is located off the coast of  Port-de-Paix, and in that port city lived Alexandre “Doli” Louis. Marie met Alexandre on a trip to Port-de-Paix in 1974. Marie’s parents did not know of the encounter. Alexander kept taking boat rides to the island. He managed to evade the watchful eyes of her parents for a while.

In the year 1977, when Marie was 17 years old, she and Alexandre were married and, that same year, welcomed their firstborn, Peguy Louis. They had two more children, Jimmy Louis and Alexandrie Hercule. Marie and Alexandre had their children at a young age, but the kids never felt that they had young parents. The couple adapted quickly and worked hard to raise their offspring. Mrs. Louis stopped going to school to raise her children, but she never stopped her schooling. She always took note of life’s daily lessons. She would discipline all three children when one got in trouble. That way they kept each other out of trouble, but also literally felt each other’s pain. They also pushed and supported each other in becoming professionals and model citizens as adults. – She was a Master Tactician.

She stayed up to date on political news in Haiti and the United States. She was dedicated to her church and was a member of the church choir in Haiti (Eglise St. Mortfort). She was calm and collected, but paid close attention to everything and everyone in her surrounding like a chess player would often do. She  was a loving and reliable person, she did everything with a smile.

As the economic outlooks deteriorated in Haiti, Mr. Louis migrated to the United States when the kids were in their formative years. Marie Lourdes Louis raised and nurtured the three children. She gave them extra love to make for the fact that their father temporarily lived elsewhere and was extra careful not to show any sign of weakness to any onlookers.

Mr. Louis is a smooth talker and Mrs. Louis was a great listener. During their long distance relationship, she never forgot the promises that he made to her and he never needed a reminder from her. She silently held him accountable and grounded, but always pushed him to achieve personal and family goals. That dynamic made it possible for the whole family to be reunited in the United States years later.

She was a great cook and very hospitable. She would keep her children mostly at home, but spent as much time she could with her husband, children and grandchildren, daughters-in- law and son in-law.

Marie passed away on November 30, 2022 at Memorial Pembroke Hospital after a final visit from her husband of 45 years. Just as it was in the beginning – he was doing the smooth talking. In the months leading to her death, Marie expressed her desire to go meet her Savior. She knew that the end was near and accepted her faith. However, she did not allow the disease to rob her of her true essence. She had a quiet strength in moments of joy and pain. We can now find solace in knowing that she is no longer suffering.

She is survived by her husband, Alexandre Louis; sons: Peguy Louis and Jimmy Louis; daughter, Alexandrie Daphne Hercule; grandchildren:  Sebastien Louis, Zarah Louis, Jaelle Louis, Angie Louis, Noah Hercule and Laylah Hercule; daughters-in-law: Michelle Louis and Kymly Louis and son-in-law, Jean Nahum Hercule; sister, Carole Metelus; brothers-in-law: Henriquez Oriental and Serge Louis.
