Raul Fernandez, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2024, at the age of 89. He was born on April 27, 1934, in a small town in Asturias, Spain to Carmen Garcia-Menendez and Alfredo Fernandez.
From a young age, Raul wanted to make a better life for himself and his family. At 19 he left Spain and traveled to Cuba where he met the love of his life, Lydia Leston. They married in 1962 and left Cuba with a dream to come to the United States. He made that dream a reality in 1964 when they arrived in New York and eventually settled in Hollywood, Florida in 1970 where he lived for the remainder of his life.
Raul was a hard-working man who eventually opened a pharmacy with his wife and managed it successfully for 9 years. He was known for his kind and friendly nature, always seeing the good in everyone he met. He loved sports of almost every kind, but was especially fond of soccer, baseball, and (American) football.
Raul will be remembered for his kind heart, great sense of humor, and his ability to make everyone around him feel loved. He was always there to lend a helping hand or offer words of wisdom. His generosity and selflessness touched the lives of many.
Raul is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Lydia, his children Maria (Diego) and Lydia (Mark), his granddaughters, Teresa and Alyssa, his sister Conchita, and his brother, Jose Luis. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 23, at 10:00 AM at Boyd-Panciera Family Funeral Care, University Drive Chapel.
