William Joseph Kenny

January 03, 1930~June 23, 2021

William “Bill” Joseph Kenny, 91, of Hollywood, FL, was born in Brooklyn, NY and passed away on June 23, 2021.

During Bill’s teenage years he became fascinated with art, drawing, and painting. This passion drove a lifetime career as a sign painter and artist. As a teen, Bill became a sign painter in New York, where he started his first business Rainbow Signs and eventually landed a job painting Coca-Cola and merchant signs throughout Brooklyn and New York City. After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, he moved to Florida.  He was fortunate to have his passion also fuel his career in Florida, opening Bill Kenny Signs and Hollywood Signs while creating the most beautiful art in his spare time. Bill continued to paint, manufacture and install signs until he was into his late 70s’ when he decided that he wanted to spend more time painting watercolors and writing a book about mixing watercolors.  He completed his “Pocket Watercolor Book” three weeks ago.  Bill loved having a bagel or muffin and a cup of coffee at the local coffee shops where he would meet his friends.   At times he would paint the portraits of the employees at Einstein’s as a gift to his favorite employees who treated him with love and kindness.  His family members have his artwork on their walls, a cherished memory of his passion and love.

Fond memories are seeing him with paint on his clothes and on his hands, talking about art and painting techniques, and making political commentaries just to frustrate others.  He worked hard to support his family and develop his skills but would put everything aside the moment one of his kids, grandkids or friends stopped by or called.  He had a very good sense of humor; he liked to tease, have food fights with the grandkids, and joke with everyone. When visiting him at his home, you soon discovered that his dogs ruled. The dogs sat on the sofa, Bill sat on the love seat, and all others had to find another place to sit. It was always fun to see what drawing or painting he was working on and listen to his latest dog story.

Bill was very proud of and truly loved all his children and grandchildren. Bill always enjoyed family gatherings and family celebrations, but his favorite moments were unplanned dinners and lunches.  His memory will live on in his children: W. Patrick Kenny, Leanne M. Sierra, Matthew M. Kenny, Tracy R. Christiansen, as well as their spouses and significant others. He is preceded in death by his stepson Seth Morvay.  His grandchildren, who affectionately called him “Pop Pop”, are Raymond Pena, Shane P. Kenny, Julia Sierra, Kaya and Kira Christiansen, and Emily Kenny.

While he will be missed, he lived life his way, passing away at the place he called home for over 50 years.

Memorial Services will occur on July 2, 2021, from 6pm-8pm at Boyd-Panciera Family Funeral Care 1600 N University Dr, Pembroke Pines, FL. The internment will occur on July 5, 2021 at 2pm, South Florida National Cemetery, 6501 S State Road 7, Lake Worth, FL.

My family and I have had fond memories of Bill and family for over 45 years. Being a neighbor, we became friends and have remained friends all these years. I consider him the matriarch of the neighborhood, and no one can fill his shoes. He will be sorely missed by everyone. He kept us all in line and loved to be a part of everything going on in our neighborhood. Yes, he did have a quick wit and his love for animals, especially the feral kittens, the one thing I will remember most about Bill. Every time I look in the sky and see a beautiful Sunset I’m going to think of Bill and know that he must’ve taken a paintbrush with him to heaven. Truly a fine gentlemen who will be missed by all.
