The angels summoned George Earl Allen home Monday morning after an incredible 93 years. By any measure, when looking back on his life, the phrase “a good life” immediately comes to mind.

George was a third generation Bostonian, who grew up the youngest of three boys and raised by a single Mom during the Great Depression. He shared his home with his brothers James and Leo, he resided in the top floor of a traditional three decker home in Roslindale Massachusetts.

He attended high school at St Mary’s in Brookline, and after matriculating enrolled at Boston State College. While at Boston State he played basketball and got an early exposure to the teaching profession. His tenure at Boston State was interrupted by his patriotic duty when the Korean War commenced. George immediately enlisted in the US Army and served overseas for several years.

After coming stateside, he made good use of the GI Bill and eventually graduated from Boston University with a teaching degree. It was during this time that George went on a last-minute blind date with a lively 23-year-old from Milton MA, named Janet (Haight). This blind date ended up being a love story for the ages. George and Janet spent the next 70 years together, they were inseparable.

The early years were not always easy for this couple. They had three boys within four years and lived in public housing. George started working as a school teacher in Randolph, Massachusetts, while working nights at the main mail facility in South Boston. George even had time to attain his Master’s Degree from Bridgewater University in Special Education.

While Janet was truly the love of his life, his “boys” were considered his second love. There was never a school happening, sporting event or birthday that he missed. Almost as important as his family was his love of gardening. George loved the start of spring as he could be seen in his backyard tilling the soil to plant his precious tomatoes, cucumbers and summer squash. At the age of 89 George even started and tended to a “Victory Garden” at his retirement community.

Like watching his family and garden flourish, George loved watching his students succeed. He taught mentally and physically challenged kids for almost 50 years. One of his proudest accomplishments was Camp Happiness. George started Camp Happiness with volunteers and donations in Sharon Massachusetts. The camp served severely disabled kids who little to no options during the summertime.

When George retired, he moved to sunny South Florida with his wife. The two spent many lazy afternoons on Hollywood Beach watching the tides roll in. Later on, George enjoyed singing and dancing at the retirement community he moved to. He had many friends at the Oakmont ALF which he enjoyed spending time with.

George is survived by his 3 sons, Michael of Davie Florida, Richard and Tracy of Stuart Florida and George and Diane of South Easton Massachusetts. George’s favorite role was as a grandfather. His cherished grandkids include Christopher, Shannon, Sean, Madison, and Colin. His newest addition was his great granddaughter, Clare. He was preceded in death by his wife Janet and his beloved grandson Steven.

He leaves behind a legacy for his family to carry forward-that of public service and helping those less fortunate. From his humble beginnings during the Great Depression to his decades of helping others, George truly lived “the good life”.

A private celebration of life will be conducted by Boyd-Panciera Family Funeral Care on Friday May 7th, 2026.
