Lydia Inea Tucker was born on September 9, 1935 in Camaguey, Cuba the daughter of the late Hubert and Florence Powell. When she was 2, Lydia migrated to Jamaica with her family where she grew up in Manchester and attended The Pike School, which provided her a solid foundation to accomplish her special and unique calling in life.
Lydia was the sixth of nine siblings and predeceased by Doris, Louise, Ralston, Jeremiah, James, Leonard, and David. She is survived by her younger brother Edson Powell.
Lydia accepted Christ as her personal Lord and Savior at an early age and was baptized at Olivet Gospel Hall. She was quite the trendsetter and would joke about how she, along with her two friends, Delores and Gloria, wore the first spike heel shoes to Olivet. So, it comes as no surprise that Lydia had an eye for fashion and her outfit was not complete without one of her many outstanding hats she helped or instructed her daughters to design.
Lydia met Samuel Tucker at the early age of 19 and in 1957 at the age of 21 Lydia became the glorious bride of Samuel Tucker. Their union produced nine children. Together they attended Bethany Gospel Hall, Cambridge Gospel Chapel and Maverley Gospel Hall.
In 1970, Lydia and Samuel answered the call of God upon their lives to serve as missionaries in British Guyana with their children. There they served in numerous places like Linden, Christianburg, and Georgetown. It was Lydia’s strength that kept the family grounded as they moved from place to place in Guyana by land and water making countless trips via speed boats across Guyana’s breathtaking Demerara River for missionary work, school, shopping, family outings and church.
In 1978, Lydia and Samuel migrated to Miami, Florida from Jamaica ahead of their nine children. In Miami, they attended Miami Gospel Chapel where Lydia served the Lord faithfully in attendance and consistent giving to the church and missions. The sweet fellowship at MGC especially with the sisters’ group played an integral role throughout her life.
Lydia lived a quiet, circumspect, and joyous Christian life and our Sovereign God was at the center of her life. So, in the early morning of August 15, 2020 Lydia transcended to a peaceful resting place into the arms of King Jesus where she lives eternally. She is survived by eight children: Patrick Tucker (Jamaica), R. Joseph Tucker (USA), Sharon Tucker (USA), Phillip Tucker (Jamaica), Hannah Wade (USA), Mary Tucker (USA), Cheryl Young (USA) and John Tucker (USA); her son Reuben Tucker (Jamaica) predeceased her; 17 grandchildren (2 of whom predeceased her); 16 great grandchildren; (1 great great grandchild on the way) and a host of nieces and nephews, her MGC family, countless other relatives, friends and loved ones too numerous to mention.
Lydia, your legacy is honored, your love is sealed within our hearts and your story will forever be told from generation to generation.
