Mario Talucci

August 4, 1924 – April 7, 2025

Mario Talucci, a beloved husband, father, uncle, host, and vibrant presence in Miami Beach’s golden era, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2025 at the age of 100 in Hollywood, FL.

He was born Omero Rudolpho, on August 4, 1924, in south Philadelphia to Torquato and Maria (Moscatelli) Talucci. His father owned and worked in a local bakery and performed as a gifted opera tenor with the Philadelphia La Scala Opera Company and the Pennsylvania Grand Opera Company. Mario was preceded in death by his siblings, Dante and Edmond Talucci and Gloria Lapolla.

In 1959, Mario began what would become a legendary career in hospitality as the maître d’ at The Embers Restaurant on Miami Beach with his signature charm, warmth, and style, Mario became a fixture of the city’s glamorous social scene, welcoming guests such as Frank Sinatra, the Kennedy brothers, Vic Damone, Billy Graham, Rocky Marciano, Betty Grable, Debbie Reynolds, and Howard Hughes.

Mario married his beloved wife and soulmate Gail (MacDonell) in 1965. Together, along with Gail’s 3 children from a previous marriage, they settled in North Miami where they remained for decades.

After leaving The Embers in 1965, Mario continued to shape Miami Beach’s culinary nightlife. He helped open Dean Martin’s Restaurant and later opened the Newport Pub in 1967 and the Roney Pub in 1972. His passion for hospitality led him back to the Newport Pub before his first retirement in 1985. Two years later, he and his beloved wife, Gail, opened Mario’s Pub Restaurant at the Hallmark, a cherished local spot that bore his name and spirit. Even after stepping away from the restaurant business due to health reasons, Mario continued serving his community. With quiet dedication, he ran a pharmacy delivery service for the Ryan White Foundation, ensuring patients with AIDS, cancer, and other terminal illnesses received the care they needed. 

Mario’s charisma also found its way to the screen. He made appearances on Miami Vice, Surfside Six, Miami Expose, Miami Undercover, and The Arthur Godfrey Show, leaving a lasting impression both on and off camera.

Mario and Gail shared a deep bond and a love of travel. Together, they explored the Caribbean and Southern Europe, often through Gail’s work with Norwegian Cruise Line.

Mario will be remembered for his magnetic personality, generous heart, his love of cooking, and the joy he brought to everyone who crossed his path. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched—with a smile, a story, or a perfectly set table.

He is survived by his loving wife, Gail Talucci, daughter Rory Moraff, Havertown, PA; stepchildren, Ginger Kocjancic, Alford, FL; William “Bill” Sorg, Hollywood, FL; and Braxton Sorg, Columbia, SC; 4 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and extended family, friends, and patrons who will forever cherish his memory.

The viewing will be held at 10:00, followed by a service at 11:00 on Friday, April 18 th, at Boyd-Panciera Family Funeral Care, 1600 N. University, Pembroke Pines, FL 33024. Departure for the South Florida National Cemetery will take place at 12:30. A graveside service with military honors will take place at 2:00.
